Hi karla. That's a good question & to add to the confusion, I'll throw in Numbers 10:29.

In Exodus 2:18, we read his name as Reuel & this means "friend of El (God)". This was very likely his given name.

In Exodus 3:1, Jethro (or, Yithro) is from the word, 'Yether', meaning 'his excellence'. So it seems that Jethro is the same person as Reuel, but Reuel was his given name & Jethro may have been a secondary name or honorific title that others might have called him by. As an example from the New Testament, we read of Simon who was also known as Peter ( Matthew 4:18); again known by two names (Simon, Luke 22:31; Peter, Matthew 8:14; Simon Peter, John 13:6).

Then in Numbers 10:29, some believe that Hobab is yet another name for Reuel/Jethro, adding to the confusion, and so several opinions have been given to interpret that 'anomaly'. However, I see it simply as: that Hobab was Reuel's (or Raguel's) son, as Raguel (Reuel) was Moses' father-in-law. This type of family tree descriptions can also be found in many other passages, including 1 Chronicles 5:14, Nehemiah 11:7.

Why is the priest of Midian called Reuel in Exodus 2:18 then Jethro in Exodus 3:1?

Stephen, God's Holy Sacred Personal Name in the Hebrew tongue is YHVH. Pronounced Yah-Hey-VeH Which can be proved in Psalms a couple differ ways.

#1 Psalm 118 is not only the longest chapter in the Word of God, it is also the Hebrew alphabet (22 letters) in alphabetical order In which you will notice that there is no J, thus impossible to spell God's name JEHOVAH and, you will also notice that there is no W, thus impossible to spell God's name YAHWEY.

Gods NAME "YHVH" is held in the Acrostics in Hebrew manuscripts in the book of Esther 5 times four times forward as YHVH and one time backwards HVHY so we would get it and did we? No.

Most churches and Christians today call God by a wrong name which would be the equivalent of me calling you Steven when I know your name is Stephen. Would that insult you if I called you by a wrong name every time I spoke to you, of you or about you? Of course it would. Our emotions are the same emotions as our Creator. Also, God's name YHVH are in acrostics in the book of Psalms as well

Psalm 68:4 "Sing unto God, sing praises to His Name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by HIS NAME YAH" (not JAH) = there is no J in the Hebrew tongue, thus utterly impossible to spell any part of God's Sacred Name with a J

Psalm 96:11 In the Hebrew manuscripts in the first line "Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad" YHVH is an acrostic in that line and much, much more concerning God's Personal Sacred Name (YHVY) throughout the Word.

    Hello Stephen,

Along with what Baker says, there are many places in the Scriptures that speak a name for God that reveals an aspect of His Being. Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. These are names of God, revealing Him as a Triune Being. So, Christians can call on the Father, or on the Son, Jesus, or on the Holy Spirit, We can call Him Adonai, El Shaddai, YHWH Jireh, etc. He hears us when we call on His name, whichever name best fits the purpose for us calling upon Him.

Here in Ch. 4 God continues to speak with Moses and Moses continues to give reasons why he cannot fulfill what God is asking him to do. He doesn't yet realize that God is able to go beyond our strengths and weaknesses to accomplish His will. It says that God became angry with Moses. Let us remember that God never sins in His anger Moses needed to know to fear God as well as learn about God's miraculous power. This expression of anger will keep Moses reverent and humble when He leads the Israelites with miracles and is separated out to be wit God on Mt, Sinai.

God had already called Aaron to go to Moses. Had they seen one another in 40 years? Aaron was eloquent and respected by the Israelites. The Israelites did not know Moses well. So, God ad it all planned out that Moses AND Aaron would be the leaders of the Israelites, speaking with and for God, performing miracles with the "staff of God" and by other means. First, they had to be convincing to the Israelites who had not heard from God in a long time and who had defaulted to the idolatry learned in Egypt. But they still knew something about their special status with God through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They had just mixed true worship of the True God with idolatry and grew further and further from the truth of God and from Him personally. Surely, there were some among them that kept the faith, but as a whole, the Israelites had backslid from Him.

God speaks to Moses about what pharaoh will do in response to the requests he and Aaron will make of him on God's behalf. So, knowing ahead of time will help Aaron and Moses to trust in God more than if God did not foretell them these things. Moses and Aaron needed some time to build their faith and to have their faith be tried so they would be rightly prepared to lead the Israelites through many hardships, grumblings, uprisings, and setbacks.

God foretold to Abraham in Hebron before He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and one month before Sarah conceived Isaac that Abraham's people (descendants) would be 400 years out of the promised land. Since He is God, what He foretells always happens.

And so, Jacob and is family went into Egypt during a severe famine after discovering Joseph was in charge of all of Egypt under Pharaoh. They were they for a long time under blessing, and then at some time, with another Pharaoh who did not want the Israelites to continue to greatly multiply and prosper, he enslaved them and made their time of slavery miserable. Many generations had passed between Levi and Moses, but descendants were identified with the tribe of Jaconb they descended from, thus Moses' and his parents were spoke of as from Levi.

I am a bit confused as to the time span here in Exodus. It says the daughter of Levi, gave birth to Moses. Even if it has been 80 years since this birth, how do we get 400 years of suppression of the people of Israel, and time spent amongst the people. Joseph brought Israel and his brothers, including Levi to Egypt. The math seems off here. How do we get 400 years from Levi to Moses if it is just 2 generations?
  • GiGi again on Exodus 3:15 - 2 years ago
.... "Why me, I am just an old shepherd here in Midian, a place of no significance. But God promises to be with Moses and says the sign to Moses that God had sent him would come after he brings the Israelites out of Egypt-God will lead them to this very mountain and Moses will serve God there. So, Moses does not have a sign up front. So Moses asks God for His name to tell to the Israelites. I do not know if the Israelites had this name for God before this time or if it is a new revelation. We have not been told this. This name YHWH- Eyeheh asher Eyeheh I AM WHO I AM-The ever Present One-He Who Is-speaks to God's eternity and ever present nature as well as having life within Himself , totally self-sufficient and unchangeable, in need of nothing outside of Himself, the Sovereign All powerful One. Would the Israelites know God by this name? God tells Moses to gather the elders and say , "The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has appeared to me." Tell them that I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt" to the land of Canaan. God assures Moses that the elders will believe him. God continues to tell Moses of his task to go to the Pharaoh and how that will go, from Pharaoh's refusal to the eventual release and the favor the Israelites will have with the people of Egypt. The Egyptians will load them up with supplies and treasures. God calls it a plunder of Egypt, but the people will give it willingly. Perhaps this "plunder" is the wages they earned for all of their toil, as God determined it.

God's instruction show a shrewdness, a guise to go for three days, when the real plan is to leave permanently. God promises to do wonders that He describes as a strike against Egypt. So His wonders will be devastating for Egypt, but the Israelites will be spared any harm.

Here in Chapter 3 we read that Moses was a shepherd for is father in law, Jethro (also known as Reuel). Moses was now 80 years old. He had been in Midian for 40 years. He was pasturing the flock near Mt. Horeb (also known as Sinai) Some scholars think that this mountain is in southern Sinai peninsula (the traditional mountain) and others say it is a mountain in northern Midian on the east side of the gulf of Aqaba. I recommend reading up on this. In either case it is said that tis was the mountain of God. Whether this identification was known then or added later, I don't know.

While there he noticed a bush burning with fire but not being consumed. Moses noticed and drew near to examine this unusual phenomenon. God was present in the flames. Now that is a sovereign God! The one who creates the fire can be within it and not perish! God calls to Moses twice, like he did to Abraham and others. "Moses, Moses!" Moses answers, "Here I am." Did Moses know that it was God calling him?

The text says that the Angel of the Lord appeared as a flame of fire in the midst of the bush. Is this really an angel or is it the pre-incarnate Son of God? The voice tells Moses to take off his shoes and not to come any nearer. God said he was standing on holy ground because God was present in this place. Do we notice the holiness of God's presence when we worship and He draws near to us?

God identifies Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This is how the Israelites would have known God.

Moses hid is face as he was afraid to look upon God. Was tis Moses' first encounter with God? God explains that He has heard the Israelites' cry and seen their oppression. God waited until just the right time to deliver them and bring them back to the promised land of Canaan.

But God says he is going to send Moses to deliver them. How surprised Moses must have been to find this out.. Moses is humble, not thinking that he could possibly be the right person for such a task. He must have thought,

Hi Betty. The Pharaoh seen in Genesis chapter 39 onwards cannot be correctly identified. Assuming the years that Joseph was there in Egypt, first with Potiphar, then the Pharaoh appeared to be Sesostris III (1878-1843 BC). He has also been referred to as Senwosret III.

The Pharaoh (first mentioned in Exodus 1:8) & seen again in Exodus chapter 3 onwards, also cannot be verified. Either he was Amenhotep I (1546-1525 BC) or Thutmoses I (1525-1508 BC). So, to answer your question, it was definitely a different Pharaoh in Moses' day to the one Joseph knew. And of course, there were many Pharaohs in-between, at least ten pharaohs.

Examine what is going on in the world and read Matthew 24 in conjunction with Luke 17, Zechariah 12 and Daniel 11 & 12.

Remember what JESUS said in John 6:63 : "It is the Spirit who gives life, the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life"

My advice to you : Do not submit to the opinions and doctrines of men (flesh), believe JESUS (WORD OF GOD)

    Amen
  • PRAYING FOR RETURNING MILITARY SOLDIERS on Exodus 3:15 - 3 years ago
Please commit to pray and stand in the gap,

For returning soldiers from Afghanistan. Ask your church to lift them up, every Sunday, corporately.

There is a huge increase of suicide, alcoholism and depression, when military service ends. It's the same for military retirees, as is for those who suddenly find themselves without a job.

It's true. Post traumatic stress is not a joke. It's killing very valuable men and women. They deserve our prayers daily.

When I was a teenager, EVERY DAY at dinner hour, we watched on television, military jets unloading flag draped caskets of soldiers killed in Viet Nam.

To the side of the jet, we saw stretchers or wheelchairs of wounded warriors being transported to military hospitals. We also saw war protesters screaming insults and curses at them! Not welcome bands.

No one should ever be received back from war in such disgraceful displays. Seeing it burned a fire in my soul.

At the very least, we as Christians should COMMIT to pray for Gods Favor in their lives. And I surely do mean as in the scriptures that describe grabbing onto the horns of the altar of God and pour out our requests: as in lay on it, shed tears of sacrifice, over the altar. Keep at it until heaven opens and rains out the answers and help in time of trouble and darkness.

Pray for employment to open to them. Favor in moving out of military housing into civilian communities. Everything. National News isn't going to show us what I saw in the 60's; every single day. I'm testifying. Others my age can offer their testimony also.

Ask your Pastor to mention this often. Ask the praying grandmothers to keep our soldiers covered in prayer. May God bless everyone responding to this call. Thank you Lord Jesus! Commander of the host.

Give honor to whom honor is due.

    Mishael

Just about everyone is taking this vaccine out of fear; fear of getting sick, fear of making someone else sick, and fear of dying. 2nd Timothy 1:7 (For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.) Hebrews 9:27 (And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:) You can take a thousand shots, have hundreds of doctors by your side but, this will not save you from death! John 11:25 (Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:) Fear not, praying for you! God Bless.

    Hello Rita,

The answer to your question is no we are commanded in Exodus 20 verses 3-6 to not make any graven images.

Exodus 20:3-6 quotes, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

    Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."

We are commanded by Yahweh not to make any likeness of things that are in heaven where Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father God. Jesus is in heaven above, and no person should be creating any images of Jesus Christ, because we are commanded in His Holy Word not to. No one after His death, burial, and resurrection really knows what Jesus looks like anyway, so all of the pictures people have made of Him will never do Him justice. Also, when Jesus Christ Himself came on earth in human form, He never once commanded the Jews to make any images of Him. Jesus Christ will never contradict Himself by what He says, does, or thinks, never!

Matthew 5:17, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil."

Jesus Christ came to fulfill the 10 commandments and other laws in the Old Testament. So the Thou shalt not's still are in place forever.

Luke 16:17, "And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail."

By that reasoning, Jesus's name is also wrong. So if Jesus's name is wrong, then what have you been calling the Son of God?

Jehovah is the English translation of the Tetragrammaton. It is also translated to other languages as- Yehowa, Ehoba, Jehov, Jeova, etc.

    Marylin,

Isaiah the Prophet preached between 740 BC and 686 BC to both Judah, the southern kingdom and Israel, the northern kingdom. His message from God has two sides.

"Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it." Isa 1:18-20

God is willing and able to forgive their sin and give them blessings of plenty "IF ye be willing and obedient."

"BUT if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword"

    And that's exactly what happened.

The 10 northern tribes got devoured by Assyria in about 722 BC.

The 2 southern tribes got devoured by Babylon in about 606 BC.

"for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it."

    Don't mess with God!
