Genesis Chapter 9 Discussion

Hello Ricardo. We are not told about the years it took for the Ark's construction, but from what information we're given, we can make a rough guess. In Genesis 6:3, God declared His sorrow that mankind had become so evil that God's Spirit would no longer "strive" (in Hebrew, the sense of pleading & continual judgement) with mankind. So from that time, God had given man 120 years of existence before being wiped out. This extra time may be for man to come to his senses, repent & turn from his wicked ways, but certainly for Noah's witness & preaching of man's destruction ( 2 Peter 2:5) to them, as well as for the building of the ark in preparation for the saving of the righteous ones.

Those who have calculated Noah's age & the birth of his sons & their marriages, believe that it may have taken between 55 to 75 years (maybe even more), for the ark's construction, plus the gathering of the animals & their feed. We're not told of those involved in its construction: certainly Noah & his sons, but there also may be others: unbelieving men (craftsmen) yet needing to earn a living by assisting in this mysterious build. Special tools & expertise would be required for the cutting & shaping of the wood & other necessary parts of this vessel.

No mention is made of saving any fish/sea creatures, so I assume that they continued in their state in the sea, whereas all, but the specified land & flying animals that went into the Ark, perished.

And God said unto Noah, the end of all flesh has come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. Make thee an Ark of gopher wood, rooms shalt thou make in the Ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. My question and comments are how many years did Noah build the Ark? If he has carpenters and workers to build the Ark? If God destroys all mankind and living creatures or livestock? How about all the fish of the sea will die also, since fish leave and breath in the water. Kindly please explain further deeper and send us my email address account to be understood clearly.

Hello RobLor. Genesis 9:4-6 reads, "But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man."

Is this the passage you're referring to? If so, the context here is about two things: eating (animal) flesh with the blood, and the shedding of innocent blood. I couldn't align this passage to what you've suggested.

Alex N 1939...Hi Rob lemme give ya feelings about the righteousness of this earth in the last days.

Isaiah says that God was gonna make a man more precious then Gold even the golden wedge of Ophir...which is gonna be by his fire of the H.G....in the last day i will pour out of my spirit on all flesh... Joel 2:32

Isaiah said that Knowledge ( An intimacy that is gonna cover this earth resulting in a New BIRTH for every man)...If i be lifted up i will draw all men unto me....While we were yet sinners Christ shed his blood for every man....He has to know us thats when we get that good seed that initiates a new Birth....thats y we need the contents of the book the living words of God.

Who shall abide the day of his coming, Who shall stand when he appears...( 2 nd coming )...For he shall be as a refiners fire and fullers soap....A cleasing fire..Malichi 3 :2...Every sinner has to have his part in the lake of fire...As our God is a Consuming fire...That H.G. FIRE....Remember Jesus said i come to bring fire on the earth which is his baptism of the H.G. and fire....Judgement must began in the house of God...In our hearts and minds etc...I will make a man more precious then Gold...Thus his baptism of the H.G.and Fire.

....I was found of them that sought me not and i was made manifest to them that asked not after me... Hebrews 10:20...The blood of this new Covenant is stronger then anymans sins

When that book is opened in the fathers right HAND we will all sing a new SONG...We will not sing this churchanity Song much longer...The contents of the book ( the living words of God) is gonna be sown in mans hearts...Abide in me and i in you.

.....Thats when peter saw a new heaven and a new earth...Which answers to our new heart and new spirit...So Rob i believe that what Jesus did at Calvary is gonna make us all Absolute Sons of God and the very Israel of God.

Gen. Chapter 9:5 God commanded NOT to eat of your own kinds blood.

Look what is happening to our children in these evil days, the so called "elitists" have been trafficking and consuming their blood.

These evil men and women will be slain by man. So let it be done.
  • T. Levis - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
It's considered that, because they are one. Genesis 9:21-27, Leviticus 18:6,7, Leviticus 18:8, Leviticus 18,

Could also mean "his" belonging to, part of, etc.

    Hopefully these are helpful

Hi Barry. Taking a direct translation from the Hebrew, Genesis 9:4 would read as: 'But flesh with its life blood you shall not eat'. This was now the allowance given to the surviving humans from the flood that they were permitted to eat the flesh of animals but not to include its blood. The blood was to be first drained out & then the meat cooked, for the blood represented the life of the animal (the life that God alone gives), as it also applies to the shedding of human blood, i.e. taking of life ( Genesis 9:5,6). In many countries, animal blood is consumed, whether taken directly or cooked/turned into another form. We need to bear this in mind when contemplating such foods presented to us.
  • Dav47 - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
The life of flesh is blood. You are not to eat anything where blood is running out. Blood becomes putrid and carries diseases, it is a health law.

What does, Genesis 9 verse 4 mean exactly?

    4. But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat
  • Maria - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
Genesis 9:4 refers to all animals. God is giving Adam a rule that if he wants to eat an animal, he is not to eat the animal's blood, because the blood is the life of the animal that sustains it.
  • Genesis 9 Explanation About Eating Blood - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
    Genesis 9:4

These first few verses of Genesis 9 include God's blessings and commands to Noah and his sons. These instructions are also meant for the generations that will follow from them. In the previous verse, God made clear that humanity was free to eat any kind of creature that moved. This would include birds, fish, beasts, and creeping things. Whether or not mankind was specifically allowed to eat animals prior to flood, they are given specific permission now to do just that.

HOWEVER, while God does allow man the ability to eat animal flesh, He includes a restriction: Humans are not to eat the BLOOD of these animals along with their flesh. The verse describes the blood as the animal's life. Later, under the Law of Moses, Israelites will be required to very carefully drain the blood from animals before consuming them. This deep respect for blood is the first step in a long process, establishing the symbolism of Christ's sacrifice for human sin on the cross. Note: COOK the meat first.

Genesis 9:1-17 continues God's interaction with Noah and his sons following the flood. First, God blesses them and gives them specific instructions about how to live in this remade world. God commands them to reproduce and fill the earth, among other things. Next, God establishes His unilateral covenant to never again end all life on earth with a flood, offering the rainbow as a sign of this promise.

The Time of the End: 2 Peter 3

    Be ready to follow Jesus.

Genesis 9:4 can ypu explain what flesh is not to be eaten? Is it talking about man and where else in the Bible is there a reference to this.
  • Chris - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
Hi Barbara. No. That would be misreading the verses ( Genesis 9:21,22). Some even try to incorporate Mrs. Noah into that verse, but all that verse states & suggests, is that Noah was drunken, lying down exposed, Ham walked by the tent's opening, & possibly lingered there observing his father in that sad state before reporting the matter to his brothers. Whereas Shem & Japheth gave their father a high degree of respect & covered him up without looking at him. I wonder what would have happened if Ham did not report it & just walked on & kept the matter to himself? Would that then turn the course of history for Ham's progeny (Canaan)?

    Hey Rick,

Agree, we humans cannot even come close to comprehending the wisdom of God. As in Job 37:5 God thundereth marvellously with his voice; great things doeth he, which we cannot comprehend.

    God bless,

    Brother Earl,

Melchizedek, you may be right, he may have been Jesus, I just have to say for me, I still have questions. Just like the three that came to Abraham when Sarah laughed and before the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, the two, we know they were angels but who was the third that stayed and bargained with Abraham? Melchizedek was also king of Salem, we know that was the land of Canaan descendants, were the Jebusites the ones Melchizedek was king over, he is a mystery for sure.

    God bless,

  • Earl Bowman - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
Brother Ronald, your right we don't have much information about Melchizedek.

I believe from the information we do have we can determine Melchizedek was Christ, the beginning of creation, no beginning or end, the High Priest of creation THEN, and the High Priest of creation NOW.

My thoughts only the Spirit can reveal.
  • Gigi - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
Appreciate your reply. I do wish we could have been given more information about Shem since he lived into Jacob's lifetime. I would have liked the Scriptures to tell us about his influence on his extensive family line to Abraham.
  • Ronald L Whittemore - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
    GiGi,

That about Melchizedek was something that popped in my head that I should have left in my head. I do not believe he was Shem either, some answers we may never have, but the ones that count are in abundance.

    God bless,

    Hi Rick,

Thanks, I totally agree, I guess I could have left that out. Melchizedek is a subject we do not have enough biblical information to find the truth. He is in only three books Genesis 14, Psalms 110:4 and Hebrews 5 and 7. He's a mysterious figure being king of Salem or Shalem, that was known as Jebus, the city of Jebusites that David defeated and now is Jerusalem.

The priest was called of God, as Aaron was, and all the priest to Israel were the Levitical priesthood, that was the order. We know Jesus was of the tribe of Judah, and Psalms 110:4 was fulfilled by Jesus. It is an interesting subject and there is more that could be discussed but where would it go. It will still end with questions unanswered.

God bless, and have a great day.

I believe it was brother Ronald L. Whittemore & not me, who mentioned the likelihood of it being Springtime at or about the time the flood waters receded. As well, I would agree with you about the starkness of the landscape after the Flood & the expressions of joy that must have been those sole humans, when they saw the first shoots of vegetation spring forth. Yet, how the saltiness of the seas did not affect the land (i.e. for plant growth), remains an unanswered question in my mind. Maybe, the miracle of the Great Flood continued on to the division of the salt-filled seas from the fertile land mass around them.
  • David - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
Bro Dan The problem with the countries and our country is the bowing down to other gods there fore the True God cannot give them fruitful abundance of food to bless them instead nothing but extremes drought or flood because they have abused that which God has given them and are living absolutely ungodly lives. Jesus Christ fed thousands with little proof that The true God meets the need and God is a God of total abundance when His Word is believed and lived.
  • GiGi - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
Agreed. Science may be able to explain some of the phenomena in the Bible, but that does not negate the work and words of our God as He communicates His will to us and shows us things for us to learn and grow in grace and wisdom.
  • GiGi - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
Thank you for your reply. Some timelines have Noah alive for about 65 years during Abraham's life and some have him dying before. Shem, it seems, outlived Abraham into Jacob's day. Sad that the Word does not record more about this if there was significant interactions between Abraham and kin, and Shem and his kin. Perhaps Shem and his kin remained in the area around the ark, since Noah was a farmer, but some of his descendants migrated southward to Mesopotamia. I doubt that Shem lived in the area of Ur due to the idolatry of the Chaldeans, but perhaps he may have ventured to Haran.

I do not think that Shem was Melchezideck due to what is said in Hebrews about shem having no descendency from parents, but hinted about His eternality. Be blessed by your studies of God's Word and through sincere discussions about matters in the text, like we are having. It is helpful.

Hi Ronald What I have read about melchisedec in the description what I see is God spoke priest into being and why not that's why he's God and that's why He knew who Abram was and who called Abram out.
  • GiGi - In Reply on Genesis 9 - 2 years ago
    Greetings Chris.

Thanks for your perspective. I have wondered what the state of the landscape appeared when Noah disembarked from the ark. You may be right. With God nothing is impossible and He blessed Noah, so He may have had the area around Noah be already habitable or perhaps the whole world. I just think that it may have been likely that the landscape was stark and fairly void of vegetation to drive home the point of how serious and grave the situation was among mankind before the flood and how thorough God's judgement can be. Thanks for reminding me about the time of year being spring according the the Jewish calendar. They most likely had some food still stored in the ark to get them through the growing season or God simply provided for them like the Israelites in the desert wanderings.
