Mary; in verses 5-8 the Lord was explaining and answering Nicodemus' question, directing it to the level of his natural thinking. We must be cleansed and born from above by the Spirit to be able at all to enter into the kingdom of God. This "New Birth" from above, is like the wind: you can hear its sound; but cannot know its circuits. So is the nature of the New Birth being "not of this world."

To be born again - one is born naturally as a physical body. To be born again is a spiritual birth. It happens when you follow Acts 2:38, (note v. 37 where, after Peter's very first message in Jesus new church, the people ask, " ... what must we do?"). Then, all the 'letters' after Acts are instructions to the new churches that have already followed Acts 2:28 on how to live a faithful life.

can anyone kindly explain to me what verse 7 and 8 really means?
  • Wayne on John 3 - 7 years ago
The old glory and the new glory. Read book of Hebrews.
  • A disciple on John 3 - 7 years ago
There seems to be some argument going on about being Born Again. Read carefully what the Lord answered Nicodemus about this: "You are the teacher of Israel, and these things you know not?" Ever since Abel, those who looked for the Promise of the Redeemer, offered sacrifices to call to remembrance in faith of that Great Sacrifice of Christ to come. Rabbinic Judaism had lost or discarded that truth.
  • Roy Sims on John 3 - 7 years ago
Hector D, in no way shape or form did the law save anyone or else sacrifices would've been made once and for all. But, under the law sacrifices were made constantly around the calendar to cover transgression. Under the law the Israelites received Mercy but Grace came by Christ Jesus. Under the law you had to always do something to receive Mercy but under Grace Jesus did it.

The 'cross' thief - he repented in a situation where he couldn't be baptized. This is an example of TRUE 'death-bed' repentance, and only God knows the heart in such a situation. Since Jesus was God (manifest in the flesh) He knew his heart and granted his prayer.
  • Hector D on John 3 - 7 years ago
It is impossible for anyone to be born again at the cross, for the born again plan of salvation was not yet completed. Jesus had not yet died, buried and raised again. God has always had a plan of salvation for each period of time of man's existence. In Noah's day the plan of salvation was to get in the ark. Moses'day was the Law,by faith. In our day, Jesus said, you must be born again. Acts2:38!!

Kevin, baptism is an answer of a good conscience toward God, 1 Peter 3:21. Baptism is a sign to all the sinner is now redeemed and a child of God. Walking in the light as He is in the light.
  • Wayne on John 3 - 7 years ago
Kevin, the thief on the cross repented to Christ and went to paradise with Jesus without being baptised.
  • Irene123 on John 3 - 7 years ago
To HD - Thank-you for your stand on His truth.
  • HD on John 3 - 7 years ago
JESUS answered andsaid unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he CANNOT SEE the kingdom of God. Vs5 Jesus answered, Except a man be born of WATER and of the Spirit, he CANNOT ENTER the Kingdom of God. Acts 2:38 Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. readMark16:16

Kevin; in answer to your question; Baptism is something God has commanded us to do. Jesus Himself was baptized; and He rebuked and scorned the Pharisees, for not repenting and being baptized. In the last chapter of Mark, Jesus said, that he that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believes not shall be damned. We obey because we are converted, and wish to please Him in all things.
  • Kevin on John 3 - 7 years ago
What is the purpose of baptism? Can one be saved and go to Heaven without being baptized?
  • A disciple on John 3 - 7 years ago
Zeneida; I'm so sorry! I didn't read your post right; I hope you can forgive me. Please don't be mad at me; I had to read a second time; and then I saw that I was to hasty. You say it perfectly; it is not automatic that everyone goes to heaven when they die! This is a great teaching about the meaning, and of our whole experience in this life: we are born into the world to "be made" God's children!
  • A disciple on John 3 - 7 years ago
Zeneida; NOT EVERYONE is going to be found written in the Lamb's Book of Life! but those who are truly born from above and converted. We CANNOT just live any way we want! We are bought with a price, and are duty bound to live, no longer to ourselves, but to Him who redeemed us by His blood on the cross. "Except you repent' says Jesus, 'you shall ALL perish."
  • Zeneida on John 3 - 7 years ago
This chapter let us know, that we can't live any kind of way, die, and go to heaven,so when a love one dies and we say I know you in heaven looking down on us,its not true ,everyone not going to heaven,it clearly states you have to born again of the water n by the spirit, which is the father n the son,n the only way to even worship them is through the spirit because they are a spirit
  • Reggie on John 3 - 7 years ago
For those who say the old testament is pointless(it no longer matters) John 3:14 is a direct correlation to Numbers 21:8-9 with Christ saying how he would hang on a pole and how Israel live as a result of this. You have to understand old testament Israelite history to understand new testament prophecy
  • Zoey Mccoy on John 3 - 7 years ago
    Thinking you
  • Hank Clemens on John 3 - 7 years ago
I would encourage everyone to meditate on John 3. Are You born again? The spiritual birth opens our understanding, eyes to see ears to hear. The natrual birth while we had eyes and ears in the womb until birthed we did not see or hear. Many are not born again in the church let alone the world. They both are a struggle coming out of the womb and then the spiritual birth coming into Christ Jesus.

To Tabitha - remember Abraham taking Isaac up the mtn. to sacrifice him? But God provided a ram caught by it's horns in the brush. As God wasn't cruel enough to let A. follow through, neither would He be cruel enough to sacrifice His 'son'. The Bible says, God was MANIFEST in the flesh. God provided HIMSELF with a flesh body in the incarnation with Mary to be the sinless sacrifice for our sins.
  • Tabitha on John 3 - 7 years ago
So amazing of God to send his one and only son to die for us Amen
  • Gordon. on John 3 - 7 years ago
In further responce to John 3:14, He was not only speaking to Israel but to all the world, because the sins of the whole world (our sins) is what he took the place of, ( John 3:16) and was lifted up on the cross for.
  • Librarygal143 on John 3 - 7 years ago
