i once viewed this as a comandment, but its not, its a statement of fact In order to experience the kingdom of god you must be born from above. which no man can do based on his on choosing or doing, its the choice of God according to his gracious election.

In response to Mary's comment. These two verses dont actually talk about salvation. It just states two very basic truths 1. God needed a vessel to carry out the act of redemtion he chose to do this in the likeness of man. So, God chose an embodiment of himself because the blood was going to need to be sinless and only God could do that. So God formed himself in the womb of a jewish virgin girl (mary)then live 33 yrs then to calvery. The other simply states that God Loved the world. No, what your looking for is much more of a blatant answer. The 1st light of God's salvation opens up in Jn3:3/3:5 then tracks itself all the way to the book of Acts starting on the day of Pentecost and all through the the book that is the unfinished history of the new test church. Read and you'll see that everytime salvation was met out they were mandated to repent ,they were baptised in Jesus Name for the what? the remission of sins, they recieved the Holy Ghost and began to do what? Speak in other tounges as the spirit gave the utterance! That is what I call blatant salvation. So dont be sold short. 16/17 r great scriptures no dought, but God has a salvation that goes beyond dought, beyond two settings of scriptures. RU born of water and spirit? read on Mary great truth awaits you.

JOHN 3:16 & 17 is my 2 favorite verses that is in JOHN 3.IT speaks about the SALVATION OF JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD,AND I LOVE THAT.Man kind everywhere needs JESUS CHRIST as LORD AND SAVIOUR.There is not a person that lives on the face of this earth that doesn't need SALVATION.WE ALL NEED JESUS CHRIST AS LORD AND SAVIOUR.WITHOUT JESUS CHRIST COMING IN OUR HEARTS AND SOULS WE ALL WOULD DIE AND GO TO THAT HORRIBLE PLACE CALLED HELL.(BUT THE GOOD THING ABOUT IT,IS JESUS CHRIST'S BLOOD CAN CLEANSE YOU, AND MAKE YOU AS WHITE AS SNOW.)IF YOU ONLY BELIEVE IN HIM,AND ASK HIM TO COME INTO YOUR HEART AND SOUL TO SAVE YOU FROM YOUR SINS.THEN JESUS WILL DO IT.HE SAID THAT IN ROMANS 10:9

John chapter 3 tells us about a Jewish ruler named Nicodemus who chose to go to the Lord at night. He did not want to be seen by his people but he had a question he did not understand about "being born again." The Lord Jesus makes it very plain that unless we are born again and baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost we can not enter the kingdom of Heaven. As we read on in the Bible about baptism, we are given the formula for baptism in Acts 2:38 and we are told that the Holy Ghost is a gift from God and only God can give you the Holy Ghost and what a wonderful gift! The Holy Ghost teaches us and helps us every day of our lives. Jesus wants us to get as close to Him as we can while here on earth. He likes a personal relationship on a daily basis where we spend time with him and praise him and thank him for all he does for us. He hears our prayers for our families and friends and acquaintances and receives those prayers from us and always answers our prayers. He looks forward to hearing from us on a regular basis and is always there waiting for us to share with him and talk things over with him. Jesus loved us so much that he died in our place on Calvary so we could be saved. The Bible is our guidebook for life on earth. It is our responsibility to read our Bibles and learn about God. He teaches us right from wrong and we have no excuses when our appointed time comes to go before the Lord about not knowing about salvation because the Lord plainly tells us in his holy word how to be saved. He also tells us how to stay saved and know that we are saved and belong to him.

This is a wonderful chapter in the bible. It breaks down how and who Jesus Christ is and why he was sent.
Now in this text it is reveal that Christ is the light that all men needs in order to come out of darkness. When we are of evil/satan then darkness will be the only direction of some. In this case thats why its hard to understand things of God but understand things more of the world. As christians and children of God, when we say or do things lost souls will always condemn or never understand. By denying Christ you are denying eternal life and choosing the penality of DEATH/Hell.

    On verse 16.
God loves us so much even though all of us were full of sin he still gives a second chance. When we look at the word "world" it means everybody good or evil. When he sent is "Begotten" that just symbolizing sacred, devoted, sin free, a part of him or the most special sacrifice ever to be offered. By receiving him you will be with your Heavenly Father in Heaven in peace with no pain or sorrow.

God sent his best therefore we should give God our best also.
  • Marc on John 3:16 - 12 years ago
This verse is tormenting me all the time because, when it says that God has us as the world that He sent His only begotten son, and when we pronounce the word "begotten" implies that there was relationship between two people to be able to generate (a word which are used for animal sex). Can not he just say "his only son." That comes to the word "begotten" in this verse. enlighten me on this subject.

v.13: What are the claims of man walking into the light? v.19-20: Jesus is the light? v.26:Baptisism by water? By any method? v.28: I am not the Christ, but that I am sent here before him?

The LORD is so good to us he gave us the very best of Him which is his Son who deserve all Glory and Honour because he is a great king. He had joy in his heart knowing that he has made a way for me when i was so short of the LORD way. I have no strenght in me to do what is right I am weak and He is strong everything that I have is his but I am nothing before Him but he loves me.
  • Sylvanna on John 3:16 - 12 years ago
John 3:16 is my favorite verse in the bible. It tells you how much he loved you just to die on the cross for you. He died for everyone's sins.
  • David on John 3 - 12 years ago
Heaven is the spiritual realm all around us, Gen.22:11 "And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said here am I."
There are many accounts of angelic encounters throughout the scriptures, angels seen by mortal men, when these angels are not visible to the human eye that doesn't mean that they have vanished, but that they are only visible in the spiritual realm.
Rev. 1:10 John says " I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day,and heard behind me a great voice,as of a trumpet"
John goes on to say the amazing things that he saw while in the Spirit. Not only does the spiritual realm of Heaven contain the angels, it also is presently home to the demons and the devil.
Job 1: 6 & 7 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence cometh thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, form coming to and fro in the earth (natural realm) and from walking up and down in it.
Rev 12:8&9 "... neither was their place found any more in heaven(spiritual realm) (9) And the great dragon was cast out that old serpent called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth (natural realm) and his angels with him."
This is a bit scary to me, to think that Satan and his angels will be in a visible form, and maybe they are here now, some people do some pretty unimaginable things, but here is where hope lies
Rev. 21:1 "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea."
The new heaven and the new earth will be one just like it was in the garden of Eden. How wonderful it will be, Amen. Let us not "bite" at each other lest we be devoured and let our comments be for the growth of the body of Christ our Saviour. The scribes and the pharisees were religious, let us not be like that.
Religion is man made, we are God made.

    God bless

Tim, God sent Jesus to die for us so that we would not have to die the second death. please study and ask the Lord to help you know the mystery of the gospel.
  • Tim on John 3:13 - 12 years ago
i believe that there is no one in heaven but God and His Son the Bible does not teach the immortality of a soul=nephesh the only way out is Resurection The Bible says that any believer that has died he has fallen asleep in Christ it will take the awsome power of Reurection to raise that person. This is a lie of satan that is being taught in the churches that a person dont die that he goes to heaven at death this is hog wash God said THOU SHALT SURELY DIE SATAN SAID THOU SHALT NOT SURELY DIE. SO WHO ARE PEOPLE BELIEVING??? Blessed it be the God of our Father Jesus Christ who hath blessed us with all spritual blessings in heavenly placed in Christ.

What does Jesus say about faith? "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God." ( John 3:16-18) What does Jesus say about them who believe not? "But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." ( John 10:26-29) Jesus said, "I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day. ( John 12:46-48) "Without faith it is impossible to please [God]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is..." ( Hebrews 11:6) Jesus came. People saw. People heard. Some believed. Their hearing and seeing Jesus led to belief; their belief on what they heard, saw, and believed became their faith. "Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." ( Romans 10:17)

  • Ben weaver on John 3:16 - 13 years ago
V.16. Precious! The word "begotten" is supported by the original "monogenae", which is defined as "peculiar generation" (belonging to genetically). Adam was the created son of God (Lu.3:38) and believers are now the (adopted) sons of God(1 Jn.3:2), but no others were begotten sons of God, borne by a human mother.

To "believe" means to trust in and rely on, rather than just mental assent of a fact. The devils also believe and tremble (Js.2:19) but the promise is not extended to them.

I suppose this everlasting life and exemption from perishing is for now during this life. When Moses lifted up the serpent (v.14) the ill were healed imediately, not after they died. Although unbelievers are condemned already (v.18) because of Adam's sin, this promise says believers "HAVE" eternal life presently. "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death (Rom.8:2). Maybe there is more freedom from the results of the fall available by "believing" and applying the promises than we have been aware of.

V.3. Jesus' statement is a direct response to the ability to do miracles, as stated by Niccodemus. The kingdom of God (where God is king) relates to Niccodemus' phrase "except God be with him". Jesus said, "Except a man be born again (rather "from above") he cannot "see" or "enter" into (V.5) this specific aspect of God's kingdom, namely, the working of miracles. Aparently, Niccodemus was born from above in order to recognize that the miracles of Jesus were from God, although he did not enter into this aspect of performing miracles like the other disciples later on did. Vs. 4,5,& 6, define that this birth is spiritual in addition to the natural birth (of water). I cannot imagine this refers to water baptism.
  • Servent of god on John 3:16 - 13 years ago
this "begotten" was never in the original script.. so it is thrown out in the new RSV version. It is pathetic to see that even though jesus never said it, the original manuscript did not say it, and yet you want to interpolate the verse to fit your "wishful thinking" that somebody was sacrified for your sin. all will die and all will be raised.. and then it would be too late for the major sin of making partner onto GOD who is alone. and in bible itself jesus said many times, do not worship other than god and yet instead of listening to him, you listen to some body , "according to", "unknown" etc..
read your bible.. not what "some" say..but read what jesus said.. what moses said.. use your brain that was given by GOD..

I believe he is referring to a carnal mind cannot view GODDLY things. I think this also goes for people seeking a physical kingdom to come....Do they not see the kingdom now? If not, what does this say for them?

believe the word of the Bible which is the Holy Ghost which is in you once you are baptised as Jesus was. You have to come out stright from the water, believe that Jesus is the son our God and repent your sins. (if you search your key words you will find several time when Jesus said do as I did when asked how to be born again.

Though the flesh will die, and we all surly will, it's comforting to know that our spirit man will live forever and one day we'll all be reunited...and God will wipe away all tears.
  • Tony on John 3 - 13 years ago
Just a correction to bri's comments on chapter 3:16. The verse reads "should not perish", not "shall not perish". Yes this is the essence of Salvation, but the word "shall" implies the 'once saved, always saved' doctrine as an absolute. If this were true, then why bother going to church, reading the Bible, or for that matter living the life Jesus commanded us to live? Salvation is a gift from God, but it has some strings attached. We have to do do our part, meaning we have to pray, treat others as we would be treated, love thy neighbor as thyself, etc. Even if we did all these things, we could still be in danger of losing this precious gift. The two things Jesus specifically mentioned that will not be tolerated were unforgiveness and blasphemy of the Holy Ghost. The "believeth in Him" part of the verse means, among everything else He said, we believe we can lose our Salvation for unforgiveness and blasphemy. Jesus said it. I believe it. Bottom line, don't think for a moment that showing up for church will get you to Heaven. Sorry if that troubles anyone. I didn't write it. lol.
