This passage is speaking about the priests, who did service in the Tabernacle. They were, by their position, set apart (sanctified) to attend to holy things (within the Tabernacle, to touch the utensils, offer sacrifices, etc.). If they should defile themselves with the dead (i.e. touch a dead body, assist at a funeral or even partake in a funeral feast, they would be considered polluted). Not that a dead body can materially pollute another, but that the position of the priest compelled him to remain segregated from anything that defiled, including the consumption of strong drink. Reading the rest of that chapter & then into chapter 22, will reveal some more qualifications & things to do & not do, for the priest of God.

However, for those of his kin who died, he was allowed to attend to them, whether arranging their funeral, coming near to them or demonstrating sorrow for his loss. But this concession applied to the priests only - the High Priest was not included & had to separate himself from all people who died.

I am struggling to comprehend the context of the word 'defile' in Leviticus 21:1-3. I do not understand how a person can 'defile' their mother, father, brother, virgin sister which had no husband, son , or daughter. What does the scripture mean by allowing next of kin being able to defile the deceased relative? Thank you in advance for your reply.

I hate 2 think of u being upset by this verse ,we have 2 remember that even the levites garments were designed not 2 encourage sweating ,i think its reffering 2 a broken nose ,they had no way 2 fix it in those days so if your nose was broken u may be breathing loudly ,maybe through your mouth ,u may have a very runny nose ,these things such as open wounds or puss or anything like that were not allowed in the sanctuary ,also levites had 2 bit fit and healthy and reliable when they carried it through the dessert and had 2 put it up and take it down ,anyone with disabilities or permenant health problems would struggle ,it does not mean that God doesnt love them or us ,each of us has our place in his heart and we all do the work that we r able 2 ,please dont ever doubt Gods love 4 u .

The old testament was written for those under the law. Now we are under grace. I believe all scripture is for edification yet since we are under grace, as an example, if we then are under grace we will not be stoned for committing sin. In the old testament before Jesus became sin for us we could have been stoned for many sins even if we repented, or said , forgive me. The laws were absolute before Jesus died for us. So today any physical imperfection is not an indication of anything having to do with salvation.

This stipulation pertains to the priests in Aaron's line. In order to approach unto the Holy God, without offense, on behalf of their people, they must be as perfect as humanly possible. This models Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest:

For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; ( Hebrews 7:26)

Believers in Jesus Christ, by grace through faith, are encouraged to approach unto God regardless our many personal shortcomings.

Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. ( Hebrews 4:16)

To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. ( Ephesians 1:6)

And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight: ( Colossians 1:21-22)

in the context what your reading applied to levitical priest to serve in the temple not the whole tribe, there are also commands that God gave about those that defiled themselves with outside tribes, keep in mind God dealt with mankind in different ways at different times until the messiah could be born.

This is a very confusing chapter. Does God turn his back on the weak and deformed? Can someone explain this verse for me? It seems God is very cruel to some of his people, especially in this verse, the weak and deformed. Please help me understand this chapter. I have a flat nose, is it my fault if my appearance is not perfect? Why flat noses can't be near to God? I've trying to study this chapter 21:18 but it doesn't make sense. I've been asking around but all the answer is not very clear to me. I AM CONFUSE!

MY COMPLETION ON LEITICVUS: This was the way that God sanctified or separated His people making them holy people, for He is Holy. This would continue to make a distinction between them and the world, at that time, and above all to give Him glory. Everyone knew them because of God's grace and mercy He gave to the Israelites. In their obedience, which they had t6o be, would bring them blessings. They were to remain unspotted from the world, as we should, today. This is why it is written, for our admonition/learning. Of course, these things changed after Jesus came on the scene and gave His life for us. AS Psalm 118,8 says, "It is better to trust God than to put your confidence in man.
  • Portia Kirkland on Leviticus 21 - 4 years ago
Ther is so much that can be expounded upon. it would take over the number of characters, so I will try to make it simple. All of what we have read are God's laws, judgments, ordinances, statutes, and commandments for the Israelites in those days. Altogether, these terms, being used interchangeably, were for the people of God to be obedient in keeping them. These things were a type of rituals to be performed as God had instructed them, including the strangers among them. The cleansings were not baths like what we do today to be lean. Nor were any of His ordinances or statues were to be taken literally. They were ceremonial and definitely spiritual, and holy. See my next completion.

Should not be taken out of context, of course, Read the whole chapter to see what it refers to. 4

Buthe shall not defile himself, beinga chief man among his people, to profane himself.

Genesis 2:16-17 God put Adam in the garden and told him he could of every tree EXCEPT the tree of the knowlege of good and evil. He was warned that if he did he would die. Spiritually. Later Eve was talked into it by the serpents deceit. He tempted her with food. Also she desired to be wise. She ate it & got Adam to eat it too. Then they tried to cover it up. Deceit. God wasn't being mean to them. They willfully trusted a talking, lying, snake! Their spiritual connection died. It took Jesus's death on the cross of Calvary to reconnect spiritual life. We must be born again. Praise the Lord!
  • Stanley Augustus on Leviticus 21:14 - 4 years ago
Did the bible said god will forgive you over and over again, so why was adam not have been forgiven that was his first sin god should of cast the snake out of eden instead, things would of been better, thats why the innocences pay for the guilty and why god allowed someone to commit a sin then punish him or her when could stop it from happening

5Consider how far you have fallen!Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent,I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.

To those who read thoroughly and understand the scriptures, read the words God himself wanted to explain.

5Look at where you feel like you're back from the start, but have been pushed and sunk further because of the guilt and burden of you not increasing your faith in him.Look back to where you've first found his true meanings that rose you up his faith, and never make the same mistake that led to your fall again. But if you don't come back to the top again, that God had given you that was the same as ever, then you'll never return.

depends on if she considered unclean by her judgments for divorcing the first time.

Is it a sin to marry a divorced woman?
  • Stanjett - In Reply on Leviticus 21 - 5 years ago
No. Repent and try again. Jesus was asked once, How often should I forgive my brothers sin against me? Till 7 times? Jesus said not 7 times but 70 times 7 times.

Jesus came to teach us God's laws, to shed his blood for all sinners, who call on him and believe in him with all our heart, but he has never said to continue is sin, for if we do we shall not inherit the kingdom nor shall we receive God's grace it's our job to speak truth so others will seek redemption , many will knock few will enter
  • Stephen Botts on Leviticus 21 - 6 years ago
We are indeed not under the law, but the law of Christ and the Gospel of Grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 make that clear. However, remember Hebrews: Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever. God has not changed how he feels about the sins listed here or elsewhere in the Law. He has only changed the way he deals with the sin. Thank God for GRACE! And the shed blood of Jesus our Lord!
  • Ahtilayah on Leviticus 21 - 6 years ago
i believe this was the law and it was established for the people, then... now we are sons and daughters of Grace.. and his grace is suffient to us... we are not saved by our works, least any man should boast.. it is a gift from God.. but the wages of sin is still death... so let us live according to his word,, In Christ Jesus.. Our Holy God....
  • Lisa warren on Leviticus 21 - 7 years ago
once saved always saved God is not going to give you something and then take it away in romans for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance Jesus said this is the blood of the new testament ,which is shed for you

How many of His little ones have been caused to sin by those who should have been trustworthy examples and protectors! Jesus has pity and is well able to recover His sheep that have been driven out and scattered in the dark mountains! But as for those who caused them to be driven out; "It were better for him if a millstone were tied around his neck and he were thrown into the depths of the sea.."

"Work in progress", I think that the Bible is clear that sins that are accidental will be forgiven but sins that you plan to do and will not repent from deserves death.

30 But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, whether he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD; and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
    - Numbers 15:30 KJV
  • Work in progress on Leviticus 21 - 7 years ago
If you once were saved and were abused and broke Gods laws is that an automatic death sentance even if you rededicate and go back to him where you belong?
  • Irene123 on Leviticus 21 - 7 years ago
    L. Eames - Eccl. 12-13; Deut. 10:12-13; Micah 6:8 ; these are beautiful scriptures, aren't they. Jn. 14:15; 1 Jn. 2:3. They make obeying the Lord Jesus so - easy. That's all one has to do is what they say; and His commandments are all found in the Gospels and the epistles.
