It's not a question of belief. Luke's account of the nativity is impossible, placing as it does the annunciation within the reign of Herod and the birth at the time of the great census. Events which are separated historically by at least a decade. Moreover Luke's genealogy for Jesus certainly does not dovetail with its source in the OT. Compare it for yourself; there are whole generations missing. There is also the little matter of what the genealogy is trying to achieve. It seems that in their zeal to fulfill a prophecy some gospel writers overlooked a basic fact of biology; either Jesus was the son of God and the virgin Mary or the biological son of Joseph and a distinctly non-virginal Mary. You may take your pick, but you can't have it both ways; if the former then the genealogy is pointless and if the latter then the prophecy is fulfilled but at the price of Jesus not being the son of God. As to whether John the Baptist was prophesied in the OT, rather depends on how you view the apocrypha. If you pretend they don't exist (in which case I'd like to know on who's authority) then it looks as if Malachi is the last word of the OT and possible a harbinger of J the B. However if you restore Maccabees together with some 500 years of Jewish history to their rightful place then Malachi is just another failed prophet from the exile period, or even earlier, predicting the restoration of the Jewish monarchy. Finally and in view of the above it really doesn't matter if or how these Essenic families were interrelated. It's a bit like saying Robin Hood must have existed because Will Scarlet was the cousin of Friar Tuck.
Regardless of who or who does not believe this account does not matter with me. But I do know that scripture dove tails together. This John the Baptist fulfilled scripture and Jesus even spoke of him. Mary the mother of Jesus also knew John the Baptist mother and it is ironic that they where related. This account is sure true and when u spend time in the house of God things happen to you that u that will have you saying wow God I am sure on your mind. Jacob said in Genesis God was in this place and I knew it not. Zacharias I am sure thought the same and was just fulfilling his duties and God blessed him and will bless his own in the same way.
At the time of writing, which I assume to be about AD 70-90 it must have been an inspiration to those who could read. Nowadays however with the benefit of hindsight it lacks credibility, historically.
I would not be the first to point out that there are a number of significant inconsistencies in this account, as there are elsewhere in the Bible. First there is the self defeating genealogy for Jesus, which incidentally is at variance with the old testament version from which it is drawn and which moreover directly contradicts Matthew's genealogy. Indeed the two accounts of the nativity also diverge; Matthew's having the advantage at least of being internally consistent (even if it does read a bit like a rerun of the Moses story) whilst Luke's is just historically impossible!
Today is the first day of the rest of our life. When we pray, pray believing that in HIM all things are about LIFE. Express yourself to HIM as though HE is your Father - and HE is. Our Heavenly Father wants to give to us good gifts - and HE will - for that it is his Personna. But the gifts are those that will: build us up, give us confidence, enlighten us to who HE is. Then we act on that and more gifts come, and so on. HE specifically states that HE will supply our every need. I believe that! GOD gave to Zachiaria and Elizabeth a precious gift - John. GOD gave to Joseph and Mary the most precious gift - the gift of LIFE! Amen. With these 2 gifts our being became even more precious to the one who created us, HIS most best creation. Be Blessed today in the Name of our LORD and Savior - Jesus Christ!
Elijah was a great beleiver,he wanted the people to no thatGod is the great one,Sinners come He will accept u who are right get it together, He wanted the people all people toplease the Lord and get the blessing from him
For starters i would like to focus on verse 37 and it states noting is immpossible for God! Chapter 1 of the book of Luke go over Alot of things that invovle poeple that choose to live life in a manner that was certainly pleasing to the sight of God. God allowed us to witness two women who man would have said it is no way possible for them to give birth in the manner in which they did but once again God is The Ultimate deciding factor and all He has to say is Be and it is!Note as well that Zachiras was,nt able to speak but after he stood on God:s decision and named his son John as God had commanded him to do , Zachiras received the blessing of speech for the first time!God is good to those who are willing to observe a life of doing things God's Way..... God bless you,God love you ,and I do as well!
I agree w/Tom's comment on the conception of Jesus - this would put his birth in September at the time of the Feast of Trumpets. That makes so much sense. I love the way that God has woven His Word from the beginning to the end. And it would be just like Him to return during the Feast of the Trumpets - don't you think.
Zacharias's course of abia was in mid June. He went home and his wife Elizabeth became pregnant.
She hid herself for 5 months and in the next month the angel Gabrial visited Mary. John the Babtist was 6 months older than Jesus. So Christmas is not the birthday of Christ. It was his day of conception.
Verse 13-18-20
We should be careful when we pray and be believing that our prayers will be answered or sometime we to may have a visitation from the lord and we like Zacharias could suffer a consequence even more severe than he We are under a new covenant and as Jesus told Peter Have faith in God. Have faith that what you pray will happen and be ready to receive without doubting when it comes Don,t pray prayers just to hear ourselves pray believing ( Hallelujah)
It shows how Zacharia the priest and his wife Elizabeh were righteous and had no children and how God was merciful to them and they brought forth John the Baptist who cleared the lords way.
Nice try Wesley! "and blessed shall she be above women of Jael", is not," blessed [art] thou among women." This means ALL Women, of All time, not Above Women. The exact translation from Greek is: "28 And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you: blessed are you among women. 29 Who having heard, was troubled at his saying and thought with herself what manner of salutation this should be.30 And the angel said to her: Fear not, Mary, for you have found grace with God."
