Mark Chapter 2 Discussion

The verse "the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath" ( Matthew 12:8) does seem to show that there is a justification for it to now be the day of rest and worship. We see evidence elsewhere of disciples meeting the "first day of the week" in Acts 15:30 and 20:7. Collections are also to be made on that day according to 1 Corinthians 16:9; but in that case it seemed to be specifically for Paul and it doesn't seem to indicate that was when they would always fellowship together. Colossians 2:16 could also relate to not disputing when we meet together. It doesn't seem any demand is to meet on Sunday; and Messianic Jews still do so on Saturday.

The verse about the Sabbath being made for man indicates that there is a superior principle involved. Namely; those things called "works" on the Sabbath that were added laws to the original statute were not to be considered legitimate. Whereby; a legitimate need such as eating; feeding animals; or healing men were frequently used as examples of how those principles of mercy; love and justice were to supercede superficial legalistic practices. Thus; Jesus would quote the scripture about Daniel and the shewbread as justification for His actions and that of the disciples. Those laws that were in effect specifically for the Jews were eventually superceded by grafting in of Jews and Gentiles; and since Christ is God in the flesh honoring Pentecost (which had a significant prophetic indication of Christ's fulfillment at the Ascencion after the Resurrection) we now are under grace. We are now under a New Covenant; which allows us to fulfill the law as He ever lives to intercede for us and His Spirit remains within us. (see Hebrews 7:25; Ephesians 1:13-14). There is no Temple; and animal sacrifices hence Jews have no way to follow former purification rites. We can choose to rest on Saturdays; or Sundays as I see it-just as we can still celebrate the Passover. Obviously there is much controversy here on this subject.

In Mark 2 :27, Jesus said " the sabbath was made for man and not man for the sabath"

    What does this mean ?

Can this be te justification for Sunday fellowship ?

    Mark 2 - the Sabbath

21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.

22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.

24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?

25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?

26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?

27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Strict observance of laws and ordinances are not as important to the Lord as seeking and serving God with all your heart. In fact, many detailed Jewish laws do not even pertain to the Church, which is seen by Jesus' reference to not putting new wine into old bottles.

We know from Job 1 that he was a righteous man who feared God (reverence, honor).

We see that Jobs kids liked to party. Job would go to church and offer burnt offerings for ALL of them (verse 5) continually; meaning every time they partied, Job went the next day to cover any sin.

Meanwhile, Satan had obtained permission to test Jobs trust in God and his faith. God had confidence in Job. He allowed it.

Between Eden and the Cross of Jesus's Crucifixion; Satan still had Adams Dominion, Power and Authority to use it. Jesus took it away from Satan later. Satan IS NOT HUMAN. He has no right to even be on earth.

So Satan is like a spy. He sees what we do and figures out our weak areas. He saw Job making sacrifices for his kids and suspected some doubt, fear, over-protection. He purposed to strip Job of everything he loved. He stirred up an F5 tornado and killed the kids, homes, meat animals, crops. All Job had left was a wife with a razor sharp tongue. Satan afflicted Job with skin disease and painful sores that weeped pus.

Satan does that stuff whenever he sees an opening in our faith. He sneaks around, uses familiar spirits to dig up dirt on us and our ancestors. He's evil. Family=familiar

Jobs wife tells him to curse God and die. His so-called friends drag his character and habits through the dirt he sits in.

At the end, God tells of His majesty, works, power and might. He OWNS storehouses of snow, hail & rain. Do we ever pray for rain in drought? pray for the snow to spread out over great distance so it's less dangerous? Ask for tornadoes to get away from your town? Pray for the hail to be tiny?

Jesus GAVE US Authority over Satan, evil spirits, weather, wicked politicians even. We have all that Adam lost. Jesus suffered greatly to give us the authority and the POWER OF THE NAME OF JESUS. We are told to BIND (arrest) the evil; we are to LOOSE the blessings, the healing, the finances, a better job, tell the weather to be still.

Hi Adrian. I believe that is correct in so far as, that sickness, pain & suffering come to all of us without exception, because we are a spiritually & morally fallen race. The moment we are born into the world with sin's nature having taken root & hold upon us, sin's course ultimately leads to death. And in that process of a gradual weakening & failing of our body's organs, we prove that in spite of any spiritual re-birth or discipline to holy living, ultimately the sin that grips our body will have the last word. I know that all this sounds very morbid but all of us are subject to the same end: that which is the outcome of sin ( Romans 6:23; James 1:15; Romans 5:12).

Yet, you might be thinking of a person's particular suffering or sickness (e.g. Job - which was a specific instance of God's Permission given to Satan to test Job's character & faithfulness; & maybe God stills allows this today- I can't tell). Yet we also know that God does discipline His child who wilfully continues in sin, not receiving correction ( Hebrews 12:5-11; Revelation 3:19; 1 Corinthians 11:32; Psalm 94:12,13). But His discipline comes in various ways & degrees of severity, as a father would mete out to his erring child. So the bottom line could be expressed as: if we were NOT sinners, living in all purity & holiness before God, there would be no physical sickness coming upon us, nor would there be need for any correction or discipline by God or man. But we should be cautious in trying to interpret every sickness or hardship being the result of some spiritual or moral failing - not always, but sometimes - each one will know in his heart from whence this comes.

As it states,.. God took away his wall of protection, but job never quit , an he never lost faith, nor blamed or cursed God ,.. an in the end as we read God doubled all his blessings,.. hence, never quit , keep the faith,.. make that stand ,..

With reference commentary in Mark 2, specifically the comment which says " sin is the cause of all our sickness and pains" I understand Job was an upright man yet still he suffered. I dont think all suffering is because of sin but I am kindly asking for someone to shed some light on this? Thanks

Hi Brad, Classically thinking, repent is a turning away from one's rebellion to and unbelief in God towards seeking God for forgiveness of unbelief, rebellion, and all sin. So one who has repented in the biblical sense is one who has heard the gospel of Jesus and believed it as the answer for salvation of one's soul and trusting Jesus for all of this. As David said, If you confess with your mouth and believe in you heart that Jesus is LORD, you shall be saved. After one repents, confesses, and believes the gospel and in Jesus, the new believer will claim that Jesus is truly God who is the Savior and LORD (God and Sovereign over the person) to the person individually and personally in a new redeemed relationship with God, who is the Creator of All.

Bless you for asking. It is always good to rethink the basics of our faith and find the best words we can to relay the truth of Scriptures concerning salvation.
  • David - In Reply on Mark 2 - 2 years ago
Hi Brad To repent is to Confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus Christ and believe in thine heart that God

raised Him from the dead and though shalt be saved. This is confessing the saviour from sin, then you determine

to live your life by Gods Word changing according to His word which is His Will. Then from this time on when you sin

or break fellowship prayerfully not intentionally we confess the broken fellowship and receive remission of forgiveness

for the current sin or error. It is a lifetime of a walk of discipline. We will sin and that's why we have a Saviour

    Praise God.

  • Grace received on Mark 2 - 3 years ago
For the past few years I have been drawn to try to further understand the teachings of Jesus. Of late, I have been instructed to strictly focus on the words of Jesus.

My last revelation came after reading Mark 2:19-22. The revelation focused on verses 21 and 22.

Mark 2:21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.

2:22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.

Addressing the second verse first, what was given to me is that the new wine is the blood of Jesus. The old wine skins are unbelievers, while the new wine skins are those who have been born again in Jesus.

Remembering at the last supper Jesus shared bread and wine stating the bread represents his body and the wine his blood, it was revealed to me these verses are representative of being reborn in the Spirit.

If unbelievers 'drink' the blood of Jesus, due to their unbelief, the wine is as wasted as if it were spilled on the floor. As for the unbeliever, they will not enjoy His promised life eternal. However, when a 'born in the Spirit' drinks the blood, their rebirth occurs and the wine/blood nourishes them to their very being. His promise of life eternal is theirs.

As far as verse 21, it remains about the Pharisees & other spiritual leaders being without true belief but preaching what they believe their followers want to hear so they (the leaders) are worshipped, glorified, and praised. Jesus's words, teachings, earthly death and resurrection are the new patch that will unravel the old teachings, as taught by those looking for self-glorification, when tested.

I encourage you to have open eyes, ears & hearts to receive His message.

Popeye asks: "infirmity" questions - Please help me that I may pass it along.

Popeye, Precious friend, I will pray for you - hope this helps:

    God's GRACE In our infirmities

    (1) Read Romans 5:1-5, especially take note of verse 3, "we glory [rejoice] in tribulations." We are not instructed here to glory in spite of the trials of life we find ourselves in, but we are to rejoice because of them. That is to say we are to thank God for allowing times of suffering into our life. This passage of Scripture expressly states that The Lord uses the tribulations of life "to conform us to The Image Of His Son" ( Romans 8:29). To this end, He uses all things "to work together for good to them that love God, to them that are the called According To His Purpose" ( Romans 8:28). As we grow mature in The Lord, our Savior is Glorified. As believers in Jesus Christ it is given us "in behalf of Christ, not only to believe on Him, but also to suffer for His Sake" ( Philippians 1:29). (Borrowed from brother Ed Bedore) My study:

    (2) After Paul [our #"pattern"# for Today!] prayed 3 times for his affliction, the "Answer he Received," According To The Scriptures, Was:

"And HE [CHRIST] Said Unto me, MY GRACE Is Sufficient For thee: For MY Strength Is Made Perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory [cp] in my infirmities, that The Power Of CHRIST May Rest Upon me!" ( 2 Corinthians 12:9) cp ( 2 Corinthians 11:23-30)

    (3) Compare With GRACE Scriptures: ( Romans 5:1-5) ( Romans 8:18) ( Romans 8:26-29) ( 1 Corinthians 10:13) ( 2 Corinthians 1:3-4) ( 2 Corinthians 4:17) ( 2 Corinthians 12:9) ( Philippians 3:21)

    #"pattern"# = Paul = ( 1 Timothy 1:16) ( Philippians 4:9)

Please be Very Encouraged In The LORD JESUS CHRIST And His Word Of Truth!

I like to believe that I am faithful to Jesus and have been most of my life! There have been times when things were not easy, but we never went without. God blessed me with a mind, and a will too work and make a good living. He has fulfilled his promises. As a matter of fact, my life at one time was as Job. Now, I can say like him that god has doubled and in some cases tripled my health, property, and children. All these things I lost a one time. The bible is true, only if you believe it and what it says, and not what someone else says! Such as Jobs friends could be like ours, who say curse God.

  • Popeye on Mark 2 - 3 years ago
Hi, my questions come from a fellow worker. He asked: Why do children suffer with sicknesses, i.e., Cancer, or any body organ problems? They are innocent. (I understand about the original sin, and I said that to him. He retorted, but why kids?) The other question was geared towards: Why are "faithful individuals constantly scrambling to make ends meet and individuals with not so reputable lives prosper? He said to me that he knew I would ponder the questions as I did for him before. I said to him that these are very difficult questions. (I have known these same questions in the past, and have not gotten an adequate answer that I could give to him.) I just trusted in the Lord, and that all questions may not have answers that I would understand. Please help me that I may pass it along to him. Thank you
  • New Testament Sabbath Practices by Mishael - In Reply on Mark 2:28 - 3 years ago
I think we as a whole, do not fully understand what the Sabbath Day is for; according to ONLY New Testament revision, implemented by the Lord Jesus Christ. He was Lord of the Old Testament (Covenant), and Jesus taught revisions in the years of his ministry on earth.

The Pharisees only perceived Jesus was going to upset their whole way of operation. They would rather have Jesus dead, than change anything about Sabbath, tithes and offerings, helping out the poor.

I will be hated too for it too. Jesus went in and overturned money changer tables, let loose the doves, scattered sheep. WHY? Outside the Temple it was like a New York stock exchange. Clearly Jesus does not want that in His Church.

COLOSSIANS 1:18; 2:8-23, Details what Jesus wants from His New Testament Church.

If we have great need of blessing and help, we give our best and Jesus will bless accordingly. The Churches operate on Tithes, alone. They were not meant to consume the offerings on their church beautification projects. All that is destined to be burned to ashes.

I might ask: if everyone in your household was in bed on the edge of death, would you leave and attend Sabbath, because you were afraid of Not going?

I perceive Jesus as being Very Practical, and Merciful to the problems of mankind. If our household is struck down in bed with COVID, we should be able to summon the Pastors or Elders to come and pray for the sick.

Sabbath is not constrained to a particular day of the week. The Service Times are posted, and people attend on those days. Jesus wants them to be able to get to a service so they can be taught, take communion, give tithes and offerings, receive prayer for healing.

That's why people are sitting home on Weekends. Our society sucks the life out of us with work, low pay, grid-locked traffic twice a day, kid problems, elderly parents that need visits.

Church must be more flexible. It serves people. Not vice versa. Study Jesus's examples in NT

Hello, I don't know any Christians who think the Sabbath is Sunday. Sabbath is Saturday. I think people often conflate a day of worship with a day of rest. These were never the same day; if you think they were the same day can you share evidence of that?

I believe Christians most often worship on Sunday, because that's the example given for what the early Christians did: Acts 20:7

I believe that Jesus did not change the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. It is not stated in the Bible.

    Part 2:

According to law, the priest was the only one who was able to eat it, because after he changed the bread off with fresh bread, he would eat the old bread himself. So the priest took it and said here, take the shewbread. You are hungry. You need it. And Jesus is saying you Pharisees don't get it. It is not legalism.

Mark 2:27: And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:

He says look, God gave you the Sabbath Day as a gift. Did you ever notice that they, and we, still don't take that gift? We refuse to take a day off to get away from involvement with the world and just rest and focus on the things the Lord.

So Jesus said look, even in your own rules, because they had rules, but if the Pharisees were walking down the road and their horse fell into a ditch, they could pull it out.

You say well how can they do that? Because they made the rule that they could. They made the rules! So Jesus said you are in the wrong spirit here.

The Sabbath was given to man as a gift. Man wasn't made so that he would fulfill the Sabbath. The Sabbath was given to man. Obviously, if there's an emergency, what are you going to do? You can't call an ambulance today, you will have to wait till tomorrow because, you know, it is the Sabbath Day.

Lastly, Mark 2:28 says Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

Wow, what a statement! He's in charge of the Sabbath, and what He does is right.

    I hope this helps you!
  • Jesse - In Reply on Mark 2 - 3 years ago
    Alec Ford,

Those verses tell us about the Confrontation over the Sabbath. I'll give you my understanding of those verses in two parts as there is not enough space in one post. This will be part 1.

First of all, in Mark 2:23, if your text says corn, they didn't have corn there in those days. It was grain fields on the Sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain. And by the way, you are allowed to do that. The law allows you to do that. In Mark 2:24, you have to understand that the Pharisees were there to evaluate. They said you are reaping the harvest.

No! The law allowed that if you are walking along, you can pull heads of grain off and eat it if you are hungry, but you can't harvest it on the Sabbath, because you're not allowed to work on the Sabbath.

So the Pharisees said, "We consider that harvesting!" In fact, there were incidents where people would walk along the ground and step on a stock and some of the grain would fall off the stock and they got them for harvesting. Legalists!

In Mark 2:25, Jesus said to them, "Have you never read?" He is speaking to religious people. And He is saying "haven't you ever read the Old Testament, the TANAK?" Have you never read what David did? This would be 1 Samuel 21:1-6. Have you never read what David did, when he had need and was hungry, and he, and those that were traveling with him?

In Mark 2:26, the phrase "into the house of God" used in this verse means into the tabernacle.

So you see, He says David and his band of men were traveling, and they were hungry. And they come across the temple and they said to the priest do you have any food here? Well, the only food I have is the shewbread, the presentation bread, the 12 loaves of bread that represent the 12 tribes of Israel.

    Greetings in Jesus' name, Alec.

In this passage of scripture we can see that the pharisees were trying to trip Jesus up & condemn Him, as they always tried to, unsuccessfully. The sabbath was a convocation (an act or rehearsal) pointing to the 7th day 1000 year reign of Jesus Christ after His second coming. This is the rest spoken of in Hebrews that remaineth to enter into. Christian's don't enter into a day of the week, though there's certainly nothing wrong with observing the sabbath and the Lord's day.

    Concerning the pharisees:

13 But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

    - Isaiah 28:13

This is why Jesus said in :

    Matthew 23:23 KJV

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

    John 1:17

For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

    I hope this helps you.

    Be well,

    Andrew
