It makes you realize your need for Jesus Christ. We for certain need His grace to walk in humility.

In Matthew 16:24, Jesus instructs his disciples "take up his cross and follow me". I would not think that this expression would become popular among Christians until after Jesus' crucifixion, with Jesus being the example of bearing the cross. I understand that the expression, "cross to bear" became popular in the 1500's, and the King James Bile was produced in the early 1600's.

Is there any evidence that this expression was used during the time of Jesus' life on earth?

One possible explanation is that Jesus used this phrase to foretell his future crucifixion. I can understand that explanation, but I do not thing that it makes a strong argument.

I would like to submit a question in regards to the word "savourest" used in KJ version. How is this word used here in Matthew 16:23?

What a blessing when the holy spirit uses our mouth, tongue and spirit to utter concurrence holy spirit.

I will give my opinion of what I read and hope it helps the viewers. My thoughts on this chapter. The Pharisees and Sadducees ask a sign. Jesus cautions against the doctrine of the Pharisees. Peter's testimony that Jesus was the Christ. Christ foretells his sufferings and rebukes Peter. The necessity of self-denial. Remember viewers Satan kills, still, and destroy. families who we love to attack.
