Is there any evidence that this expression was used during the time of Jesus' life on earth?
One possible explanation is that Jesus used this phrase to foretell his future crucifixion. I can understand that explanation, but I do not thing that it makes a strong argument.
Any and all comments are welcome...thanks!
Thou art acting the very part of Satan, both by endeavouring to hinder the redemption of mankind, and by giving me the most deadly advice that can ever spring from the pit of hell. Thou SAVOUREST NOT, Dost not relish or desire. We may learn from hence, That whosoever says to us in such a case, Favour thyself, is acting the part of the devil: That the proper answer to such an adviser is, Get thee behind me: That otherwise he will be an offence to us, an occasion of our stumbling, if not falling: That this advice always proceeds from the not relishing the things of God, but the things of men. Yea, so far is this advice, favour thyself, from being fit for a Christian either to give or take, that if any man will come after Christ, his very first step is to deny, or renounce himself: in the room of his own will, to substitute the will of God, as his one principle of action.
1And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
2And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
3And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
4And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make w

God bless you.
then we remain (bound), an in bondage. Jesus came to set the captives free, but the choice remains yours if you want to to be loosed . Peter preached in the day of Pentecost an 3000 were loosed from bondage that day. Every Sunday the gospel is preached and there are those who believe and are loosed an others will walk out still in the bondage they came in with because they refuse the gospel.

It only then that brings glory to God in heaven and honor to his name earth.
However, gifts are earned but given by omniscient God and we receive them humbly and use them even with humility. Remember what Jesus said to not long after this affirmation.
"And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?
