    Book of Joel, chapter 1

8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.

9 The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the LORD; the priests, the LORD'S ministers, mourn.

10 The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth.

11 Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen; howl, O ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished.

12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.

13 Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.

14 Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD,

15 Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

    Jeremiah 15-18 Prophesy

15 Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not. (Killed by Herod)

16 Thus saith the LORD; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the LORD; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.

17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

Matthew 2:13-18; the event as foretold by Jeremiah:

13 And when they (the 3 Kings) were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.

14 When he arose, he took the young child (Jesus) and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, Jeremiah saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.

Comment: it was a prophesy foretold hundreds of years prior. All of Gods prophesies will be fulfilled; if He tells it to a prophet. Note: the slain children went to heaven that day.

I don't understand why God sent a messenger to warn Joseph of the impending coming of Herod's men and didn't do the same for the parents of the children murdered on that unfortunate night.

In Judaism and the Old Testament there are Nazarites. The Nazarites followed very strict interpretation of Jewish Law which included not drinking wine or grapes amoung others. Could the place of Nazareth be confused in interpretation to being a Nazarite?

This is a testimony by Mathew regarding the basic events that occur when our Savior was born. Without adding anything from anywhere else we can conclude that the birth of Jesus was prophesied way before He was born. This chapter does not state that the wise men were saints. In Russian translation they are called volkhv (which are somebody like sorcerer or magician). Somehow it was open to them that there will be a birth of the King of Jews. God can use anybody in order to achieve His plans, and here he used wise men. Whether wise men knew about the real significance of this event, we do not know, however perhaps they knew something very important about was happening by reading stars.

I agree that Satan uses man to change the story as the story has certainly been changed. I believe the main point of the Bible is that man was lost in need of a Savior. So, God the Father sent His son, Yeshua Jesus , a Hebrew to do just that.

Man can not live by his understanding alone we are like sheep and sheep are not known to be smart Yes it is important to follow the whole bible word for word every word counts. But the main point of the bible is that Jesus Christ is the Son of God the Father and Satan uses man like Eve in the garden, very subtly to change the story. Now we know as Christens without Christ you can not get through

Now we know as Christens without Christ you can not get through to the father.... Example the Muslim book follows the old testament but Jesus not son of God.

Nothing is to small for God to be concerned about. To get all of the meat off the bone, one should be concerned about all details, however small. Failure to do so may result in the incorrect understanding of the meaning of Scripture.
  • Sometime we get trivial over the small details we are taliking about Jesus Chri - In Reply on Matthew 2 - 4 years ago
Sometime we as Christians get caught up on the small details of the bible which satin loves, the focus here should be the son of god who had been preordained to come into this world to be a narrow gate to salvation for those that believe he is the son of god had come to pass just as the before this time profits had prophesied
  • Pam on Matthew 2 - 4 years ago
The Bible doesn't say the number of wise men. This is accurate. But, it was the shepherds who first saw the baby Jesus. By the time the wise men saw the child, He was not an infant but a small child.

We assume that there were three wise men because of the three gifts that were given: gold, incense, and myrrh Matthew 2:11 . However, the Bible does not say there were only three wise men. There could have been many more. Tradition says that there were three and that their names were Gaspar Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar Balthazar.

Andrew - the spiritual lesson here is that God provided a guide - no doubt about that! Be it a star or something else in the sky over 2000 years ago is not the fundamental point. Yes, I believe God can do anything - and my belief is not governed by physical world universe limitations otherwise I would not believe that Jesus performed his many healings. May God be with you.

Don't forget, the Lord can do all things...what would prevent the Maker of the stars from moving one to guide the wise men to His Son's birth, worship and celebration. "With God, all things are possible."

Did God say it? Or rather the wise men did? Everybody knows that if a star is close enough to be followed, everyone around would be burnt completely. I'm Christian, but I doesn't mean I lost my intelligence. When you read Jesus teachings and its wisdom, that's God's word. However the Gospel has some stories anecdotes. For instance, the story of Herod killing John, is God's word? Or just an story?
  • Ann - In Reply on Matthew 2 - 5 years ago
Andrew, if God says in Matthew chapter 2, that the wise men were guided by the star, I believe God's word. I would be very careful in how you don't believe God's word. Very dangerous.
  • Roy Camacho - In Reply on Matthew 2 - 5 years ago
Notice how you said, " I don't think". This isn't about what WE think my brother. This is about what God's word says. God's word is above YOU. YOU are NOT above IT. It is above me, and it is above all of us. It was a star that guided them because God said it was a star. Mercy, peace and love be multiplied to you in the name of our Lord Christ Jesus. Shalom.
  • Andrew on Matthew 2 - 5 years ago
I don't think the wise men were guided by a star. Maybe an alien craft? Stars are not moving around to guide travelers and just stop above where Jesus was. Something else was guiding the wise men towards Jesus.
