In Matthew 4:2-10 devil is gradually tempting Jesus (from food, then jump from the high tower and finally to be the emperor of the whole world). Jesus rejects all this (it is hard to reject food when you are hungry, not to mention the other temptations). The interesting thing in this chapter is how Jesus defend himself from all these temptations. By knowledge of the Holy Text, solely. It is a great lesson for me. GOD BLESS YOU ALL

In researching matt 4:4 I find myself reading and understanding this part (..by EVERY word that proceeds from the mouth of God) in this way..By THE word that proceeded out of the mouth of God (refering to Jeshua (Jesus). As a reference I use in the beginning was THE Word and THE word was with God and The Word was God and through Him (Jesus)all things were made. He is the Breath of God who gives life to man. Jesus was talking about himself not the bible. correct? or not?

I believe Matthew knows about the conversation between Jesus & Satan only through the divine revelation of God the Father, or Jesus himself. I don't feel everything Jesus said & done has been recorded in text. Just the things that show his mission for the saving of mankind & deity. I guess I ponder this question to everyone. Has there ever been a time you knew something? That no physical person told you & you didn't research either? That's the power of God, revelation only comes through Christ.

In verse 8, when Satan showed Jesus the kingdoms of the world. I believe when Satan was banished from heaven. The world (i.e. the earth.)became Satan's dominion. Even though he goes to & fro to devour the people. We have to remember Jesus rose from the grave with all power in his hands! So Satan can't destroy or devour anything without God's permission. Satan can only plant the temptation, it's up to us if we act upon it.

In verse 4,food is physically nourishing to the body. Food & water will sustain your body & help to keep you alive. When Jesus told Satan "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God!" He meant in the spirit, your spirit needs to be fed just like your flesh. The word of God "DAILY!" Is our spiritual nourishment for the soul. The word of God helps us to sustain a right relationship with Christ. Grow in faith. Teaches how to love with a Christian heart. Live in a world that isn't ours. How to treat non believers. Accept death and so much more!!!!

I think in order to understand this verse a word study needs to be done on both the words "Kingdoms" and the word "World" in my own notes I have found that the word "World" according to Strongs Concordance of the Bible which would give more insight to the verse. For example if you were to look up the word "World" in a concordance...it is the greek word "Kosmos" meaning the universe. Which comes from the another greek word "Komizo"(according to the New testament greek Lexicon) in which we get the primary greek word "Komeo" meaning 4 different things: 1 to care for, provide for, take care of
    2. to take up, carry away in order to care for and preserve.
    3. bear off
    4. to carry, bear, bring to, to carry away for one's self, to carry off what is one's own, to bring back.
I also believe that an understanding of how the ancients viewed the Universe is also needed to understand this verse. So that means a study of Ancient greek words such as "Komos" is needed because that acient grek word is still in use to today to describe outer space, the stars, the planets, and what goes on up there. Examples: Cosminaut, Cosmic, Cosmos(modern english)= Kosmos (ancient greek)

The Devil was trying to temp Jesus with the Kingdoms of this world? Let me ask you would this have truly been a temaption if the Devil was not able to offer this things? "So who really rules this World?"

An healthy man is one that feed on the words of God every. Our live is gurantee only by the words of God. Any other bread aside from the bread of life, JESUS, put out life out of balance. Prophet Isaiah says; he that he is thirsty, come buy water without money. The gateway to power is thirst for the word of God. Jesus was hungry for the words of God and not bread and that is why he said man shall not live by bread only, but by the word that comes out of the month of God.

    Matthew 4:4
The first ever verse in the Bible that i memorised as a child in the primary school. I did not understand what the verse really mean. As i was growing old and older, the verse continues to have a deeper meaning to me:
The bread of life Jesus Christ, is the only meal that can supply, satisfy, and sustain man's physical and spiritual needs.Jesus was talking about himself in the verse.

Jesus was temped of satan. What makes some of us
Christians think that we are beyound satan's temptations when JESUS HIMSELF was tempted?
If satan has left you along latley, that is because satan already has you.THINK ABOUT IT.

The GOD Jesu was referin to is Jehovah, his father. He was quoting from the Old testament when he was responding to Satan, even when Satan tried to misuse a verse concerning the Angels, Jesus corrected him.

I like matthew 4:10 it shows who jesus wanted
us to worship and who GOD is.people who try to
pray to and to worship jesus should remember what
    jesus told satan.
  • GwenO on Matthew 4 - 14 years ago
We bring our flesh man under subjection by denying it, and seeking the spirit, and filling ourselves with the good things of God. As Jesus was doing by replying to satan by quoting scripture. He was our example of how we should handle those situations which may make us fall through temptation. The goal is for us to make our flesh do what the Spirit requires, and work for the Spirit, not against it. The thing to remember is that Jesus did not want anyone to worship the flesh he was, that is why he said to worship in "Spirit and in Truth". Jesus was God manifested in flesh, He was ALL the fullness of the Godhead in his body, but it is not his body he wants worshiped, it is the Spirit of God that was within him and in heaven. As the Spirit now dwells within us and in heaven.
  • GwenO on Matthew 4 - 14 years ago
What do you think Jesus meant when he told satan, "It is written, thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God"? He was telling satan that he could not tempt him to make him fall to satan's wiles. That he was not going to fall. The entire temptation in the wilderness was so the flesh man of Jesus could be brought under submission of the Spirit of God which dwelt within him. It is the same for us today, we must bring the flesh under the subjection of the Holy Spirit and we do that by It does not say that God cannot be tempted, it says he should not be tempted. Big difference.
  • Darren D on Matthew 4 - 14 years ago
Can "GOD" be tempted? How can jesus have been
temted by the devil if he would have been GOD?
