    E,

Henry has given you a good breakdown of Philippians Chapter 1, emphasizing the main thing Paul was concerned with was that Christ was preached. If you are looking for help on just Philippians 1:18, here's what I can share with you. Philippians 1:18 which says, What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.

The word rejoice means to be satisfied. Obviously, Paul's not happy that people are coming between him and other people, and there's a division happening in the fellowship in the body of Christ. But he must be satisfied with it all because in the midst of it all, Christ is being preached. And with all the things that are wrong about what these other people are doing, Christ is being preached!

So Paul says that's my satisfaction. That also saves him from growing bitter against those who are treating him unjustly, and it allows him to keep the fellowship, the unity of the fellowship in the bond of peace.

    E. Phillipians first four verses start with Al the saints that's us in Christ Jesus

Then he talks about the fellowship in the gospel or like!indeed notice verse 9

The things he's talking about deal with the mind and heart increasing in their

Walk then he's dealing with in verses 15-17 the way in which the gospel is

Preached i.e. love of God via the spirit or the senses. His bottom line was Christ

Is preached, in the church of Phillipi there were different attitudes of thought

I.E. egos and natural practices being exhibited not walking in pure love.

Lorrie. The context of phillipians is dealing with fellowship among Christian's

And like-minded in the gospel. There were divisions even between leaders

That was affecting the believers and making division. 1 Corinthians chapter 7

Deals with marriage whether Christian or not.

I'm totally lost on most of the discussion in Philippians chapter 1. I've read this chapter like five times in the commentaries and researched it and I'm not really finding anything about marriage in there I meant that's an overall yes thing to deal with but how did it come to be such a discussion in Philippians one? I guess I'll go ahead and give my input on it though I believe if you are an unsaved person and you get married and divorced then what you do once you're saved is what matters otherwise why would we be telling people that Jesus forgives our sins. before I was saved doesn't count as it does after I was saved he cleanse me of all my sins and still now I'm a new in person in Christ from that day forward everything matters. Including divorce and marriage you would definitely apply God's word to divorce and marriage and you wouldn't do it unless adultery. But again before being said you didn't know this.

What I think, or what you think will not matter in the judgement but what sayeth the Lord. I would rather see anyone in church serving the Lord teaching others the truth (Jesus teachings) than denying him. The Lord can & will make a way if we are willing to do his will not ours.

Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Hello Jacquelyn . Here r a couple of scripture references that may or may not help u : Matt Ch 19 V 1-12 . The desire between a man and a woman is totally natural . I have seen people drive them selves crazy over this problem of marriage , divorce and re marriage . I have seen people drive them selves crazy because they have tried to fight against their own natural desires . I don't think that I , as a happily married man , should ever tell anyone , Christian or not , that they can't get married and b happy as I am . It's not my place to tell another human : no , u have to stay single for the rest of your life . I have lived alone , I didnt mind it but I'm a much happier person now I'm married . To condemn another person to a life of loneliness , deny them the ability to give and receive love , that's not my place . I have total admiration for those who do deny themselves marriage , I'm not so strong . And I'm confident that I don't have to b a single celibate person to b a Christian .

Both my husband and myself had relationships with others before we were saved . He got married and divorced before he was saved , his wife commited adultery several times . I never married before I was saved . When we met each other we were in love in less than a week and have been married for over twenty years now . I don't believe that there is a hard and fast law about this . I know others will disagree and that's ok . I believe that if my husband and I had met when we were young we wouldn't have liked each other much . People change all the time , our life experiences change us , hopefully for the better . I'm not who I was twenty or even ten years ago . God is teaching us things all the time , moulding us into who He wants us to be . He gives us what we need when He knows we need it , I think this is true of our relationships also . He brings into our lives the people that we need or that need us exactly when the time is right . Love is God's most awesome gift . If it knocks on your door don't ignore it . Pray about it , take your time ,but don't slam the door immediately .

    Hi Jacquelyn.

I tend to concur with Richard here. It is wise for anyone who is divorced to really learn what Jesus taught about this matter. If He says that if one divorces his wife and marries another or if one marries a divorced women, this marriage causes the spouses to commit adultery. I don't believe like many who say, well maybe the first sexual relations are adultery, but then God forgives and so the couple can continue being married. I believe that it is a continuous adulterous relationship, unless the prior marriage ended because the other spouse committed adultery. I do think that those who truly want to follow Jesus' words would not remarry or marry someone who was divorced before. And I think that those who have remarried against Jesus' words, should separate and remain unmarried. It become more complicated when children are involved from the second marriage.

As Richard said, we don't say to a their or murderer that their first theft or murder was sinful, but they are forgiven and subsequent thefts or murders are no longer sinful, so why do we say this to those who remarry? It is a sticky subject and much compromise has occurred among believers and in churches and their pastors who counsel people to remarry and perform re-marriages.

I am a married person, so I do not know what it is like to be a Christian and be divorced. But I do think that Jesus' words are what we should follow and advise others to do. We are in a sad state in today's world.

Not sure what Chrysoberyl a gemstone has to do with the question. 99 out of 100 probably would say that once the deed is done; so to speak and the new marriage consummated; that they should remain together. That is not how I see scripture; however. All I can say is how I had in my own personal life reject a new relationship before it got to that point; as to my understanding on the matter. Others had said to me "pray about it; do whatever the Lord seems to show you" or something to that effect. Even the church I attend now has a rare stance in not supporting remarriage among a believer (although I would say being a Christian or not doesn't matter in that situation). However no one wants to dogmatically state that a person should leave their partner after marriage. I won't name names here but this is prevalent among well know preachers who would not hold to that logic should say someone were to continue in theft; drunkeness or some other vice. The question is whether a person is in a CONTINUAL state of adultery; which it seems clear to me in scripture. The exception clause probably refers to Jewish espousal which was to be held at the same level as an actual marriage so that anyone having relations that were engaged could also be put to death. I suggest studying covenants here-and in this case; you may be the only voice who will have the guts to tell the truth. I will also say that if the FIRST marriage was illegitimate: i.e. not the first while another spouse is alive or involved someone previously married that would be the only other reason other than the death of a former spouse to stay in such a relationship. Obviously; you want to see these people come to faith if they aren't at present; and you should see if they truly are seeking answers or the Spirit leads you to confront them. There are numerous testimonies online; and one good book on the subject is Marriage and Divorce: The Trojan Horse and David Pawson sermons. Agape.

If a person has been married but divorced but now married in an adulterous marriage but comes to being a chrysoberyl they have to divorce the new present husband

RESPONDING TO Victor Anyanwu on Philippians 1 asked...

An unsaved person told me yesterday he was told "there is nothing like rapture" Is it true?

You are replying to a comment by "Victor Anyanwu"

    Hello Victor,

    1 Thessalonians 4:13-17

verse 16: these Dead in Christ shall rise first. for example:

    1. ( John 11:11) Lazarus he died again

    2. ( Acts 7:55,59, 60) Stephen after saying this, he fell asleep in death. (the vision he saw was in heaven)

    3. ( 1 Corinthians 15:6) 500 seen Jesus appear after his death. but some of

    them died.

    4. Some of Jesus apostles died of old age, most died under roman oppression (by the "ad." "c.e." Jews)

(they were put in prison like Paul as you brought out in Philippians 1), some died in captivity.

Verse 17: Those alive or remain will like Jesus will go to heaven.

( Revelation 14:3/ 144,000). notice the first died. if the second is to be caught up together with them.

they will have to die from flesh...to be taken from earth. ( Acts 1:9,10; Revelation 20)

so no... rapture is not a word in the bible. when Jesus was impaled the scripture said

after that his spirit ( Matthew 27:50 invisible/ john 4:24) yielded up. no human can see the spirit.

    ( Jas. 2:26)

    Hopefully this helps

    Hi Victor,

Don't believe everything you hear from mankind's lips. I trust and believe what God says, though. Look at what is said in 1 Thessalonians 4:17. People call that event a rapture. God bless.

Paul the Apostle to the Philippians, abbreviation Philippians, eleventh book of the New Testament, written by St. Paul the Apostle to the Christian congregation he had established in Philippi. It was penned while he was in prison, probably at Rome or Ephesus, about 62 ce.
  • English sacha - In Reply on Philippians 1 - 3 years ago
Hi Marcelo , it's called Phillipians because it was written to the church or rather congregation at Phillipi in the same way that Galatians was written to the Christians in Galatia .

Hi Marcelo Vega Each of the church Epistles are addressed to the Fellowships in the specific areas Paul preached at Rome, Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Phillippi. Collossae, Thessalonica.

  • Jesse - In Reply on Philippians 1 - 3 years ago
    Dianne,

It is interesting that you say that because we see that even today, especially with the health, wealth, and prosperity teachers. They see a believer struggling with hardship and they say that God is not blessing them or that they do not have enough faith. But you are correct. I did some study several years ago on Jewish culture back in that time frame and that was their way of thinking. They believed that if you were wealthy and in perfect health, that you were truly blessed by God. Well, Paul was a mess! He had health issues, problems with his eyesight, and boils all over his body, shipwrecked, beaten, and spent time in prison. He was not a pretty sight to look at. The way the Jewish leaders saw it was that there was no way that Paul was a man of God because how could he go through so much hardship and struggle in his life if God was blessing him? It's sad that there are still people who believe this way today!
  • Dianne - In Reply on Philippians 1 - 3 years ago
Nice sharing bro Another point I would like to share is that he was incarcerated so much that people started to get tricked into not believing what he taught anymore. Others were telling them that if Gods working in Him why is He always getting in trouble, they were looking at it buy the senses not spiritually Ephesians 6:12. He preached to all asia minor in acts and by 2 Timothy 1:15 He writes almost everyone turned from Him. That's an unbelievable verse when you think about it. With all the signs miracles he did by Gods power and they witnessed it they were still tricked out of the truth.

    Mountain Preacher,

Paul in Philippians 1:12-30 gives his philosophy in dealing with fellowship. The first thing Paul wanted them to know was that he being in prison in Rome, that he was a prisoner of Jesus Christ. Paul was put there for the furtherance of the gospel, not because he did anything wrong. Paul was put under house arrest for two years which meant that a soldier had to be chained to his arm 24 hours a day in 6 hour shifts for two years. Paul wasn't going to complain. He's going to say, "Hi buddy, oh you don't want to hear the gospel? Guess what? We're chained! I mean, who's the prisoner here? The soldier was his prisoner!

Philippians 1:14 is to look at Paul's difficult circumstances. It was an encouragement for them to see Paul in chains, in such a difficult circumstance, and to see him still preaching the gospel under such hardship. So Paul's philosophy was that prison does not cut off fellowship nor God's work. What is interesting is that the people in Philippi, seven hundred miles away are supporting him and praying for him, and even sending their pastor.

In verse 15, he says some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife. Hard to believe, huh? To preach Christ in such a way so as to divide people from other people? We see the same contrast in verse 16. Their motives are not pure when they are preaching the gospel. Paul says "Supposing to add affliction to my bonds."

False teachers would actually go to places where Paul preached, and they would say "Did you hear where Paul's at?" And the people would say no, what's going on? Well, he's in prison in Rome. What happened? And then they would say "I told you to stay away from that guy. He's a jailbird. He's always involved in fights and riots and they arrest him all over the place. I told you not to listen to him."

And then they bring in their false doctrine. So Paul says, "Some people (false teachers) even preach Christ in a way so as to even add more affliction to his imprisonment."
