Psalm 51 was written by King David after Nathan the prophet confronted him about having Bathsheba's husband put on the front lines in war. He was killed.

David married Bathsheba. Nathan also told him that his and Bathsheba's first born child would die. The baby died. David repented in ashes; got up and washed, ate a meal and comforted Bathsheba. His servants thought that he was terrible: Acting like the whole thing was normal.

David had poured out his heart hoping God would change His mind. ( l am the Lord and I change Not)

David tried. He knew it was his sin, totally.

He had children problems the rest of his life. He died before Solomons reign started. He didn't know his son would have hundreds of wives and concubines. Make treaties with nations God forbid, worship their idols.

Psalm 51 is authentic repentance for sins.

The site now has an Exhaustive Concordance, along with other translation comparison. Also the 1611 KJV. Several times I've looked at a deeper meaning or clearer understanding & the 1611 KJV was really helpful.

To use the Concordance, you can tap verse. New page opens. Bottom of page the words can be individually researched from the original text used for these translated versions on this site.

Interestingly & worth noting : occasionally I have found the surrounding words sometimes are a better key to my understanding than the single word, that I found perplexing.

Also prayer for wisdom: James 1:5,

    Hopefully this is helpful

When I read this psalm in the KJV and NKJV, Wycliffe's Bible and RV1885 versions. I can't help but to interpret it in a totally opposite way to all the classic commentaries and indeed the more modern translations and their commentators.

The key difference in my mind arises from use of the archaic versions' words "filled with contempt" as opposed to the more contemporary versions' "endured no end of contempt".

I understand this psalm (ie the KJV version) to be similar to Ps:51 a cry for mercy by a sinner.

In that, the psalmist feels conviction of their collective contemptuous attitude which is both like the contempt of those who live at ease (the rich?) and also the contempt that the proud have for others.

I looked at the Hebrew and it's frustratingly unclear because of the Yoda style grammar.

I think the use of the word "mercy" is also really shaping my opinion because words like "salvation", "deliverance", "rescue", "save", "protection", "justice", "defence" are most generally used when the Psalmist is feeling oppressed and is seeking relief. "Mercy" feels more in line with repentance or confession.

    Love to hear others' thoughts.

I thank you for your Commentary On Psalms Chapter 123.
  • Andy G van den Berg on Psalms 123 - 4 years ago
The most recent comments are confirmation what spirit you are of and the spirt you serve ( Luke 9:55; John 8:34).

There are not too many songs being heard in Eastern Canada, similar to California, but for different reasons. People that make their livelihood of the leading industries have their food basket slowly taken away. China has closed the borders to most products (e.g. lobster) and farmers have little to harvest as a result of the severe drought. The rural communities have been dying for the last ten years and the list of businesses that are closing is staggering. It is clear by your comments that you do not know what 'sin' is. It is not an act as you have been made to believe, but rather the 'fruit of the natural man' and is the very reason we urge you to repent. It means to turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God ( Acts 26:18).

Hospitals are a 'stronghold' ( 2 Cor. 10:4) of Satan's divided kingdom and his world ( Matthew 12:26; Luke 4:6; 11:18; John 12:31; 14:30; 2 Cor. 4:4; Eph. 2:2; 6:12; 1John 3:8) and the love you speak of is the love of the world and we know that you have not the love of God in you ( John 5:42).

So our message will remain the same: ye must repent.

The word 'Repent' means a lot more than what people by nature have been conditioned to believe. It is the key principle of all the teachings of Jesus Christ and the axiom (basis) of the Word of God and a prerequisite and primary requirement for the salvation of mankind. It actually means the changing of spirits - to turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God ( Acts 26:18).

For a better understanding and the 'spiritual truth' of what it means to repent, and learn how and by whom mankind has been deceived ( Rev. 12:9), and what people must do to be reunited with the true and living God, we invite you to seek Him according to the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive ( John 14:17).

    In His Service.

I love the verse that says "Have Mercy upon us." If we ever needed the Lord it's now. The Bible is God's Children

road map to Heaven. Sometimes people try to force the Bible upon non- believers , but until they accept the

Lord Jesus this is not their word. I Pray daily for everyone to accept Jesus , then they can have all of the

Privileges that we experience as Children of God. Everyone is Welcome to become a Member of God's Family.

I once went to a very nice restaurant and the waiter for our table never missed anything. If our glass was low he was already refilling without a word spoken. How? In a discreet place nearby he stood intently observing us and our table. He knew (as in vs. 2) us well enough to the point that he could see that subtle 'signal of the hand.' Are our "our eyes wait[ing] upon the LORD our God" like him?

God loves us all, and it's only through excepting Jesus as our Saviour, and repenting of our sins shall our name be in the book, but I can say trust in him, honour him, love him with all your heart, soul and might, he does protect us, he cared enough to send me back, I was to have died or be a vegetable, I love this psalm , I will never deny him to anyone, he gave me the chance to repent honestly

"Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens...Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud." In a thousand different ways each day we will have to bring our thoughts and feelings under subjection. Our eyes and our hearts must be fixed on Jesus, who causes us to rise above the scorn and contempt of the world.

As we may be scorned. We must ask God to make us aware when we are scornful concerning others or holding them in disdain or derision. Always remembering It is Gods Mercy and Grace that allows us to be accepted in the beloved. Help us Lord to respect and pray for all men.

I totally agree with Pastor SD to God be the glory. God answers prayers He said ask and it shall be granted unto you. I asked for healing and Jesus
healed me of cancer, I got baptized and thank Him every day.

All most be mindful of God's love and healing through life's experiences which are subject to disappointments, trials, happiness, confusion, growth and development. As such time and forgiveness with an understanding Faith days seems to turn into months and months years and years continue with the Love and Power of God's Graces.

just wait upon the Lord for His mercy and grace , need not to discourage rather having complete confidence on God Almighty to approach who is seated on His throne and looking down from above to help the needy . There are few qualities to approach God, 1. humbleness 2.patience to wait 3. Have complete faith in God 4.continuously seeking Him 5. Exalting Him always . Lord alone who helps for all..

We as Christians at times feel oppressed by circumstances pertaining to our family, our jobs or maybe the political environment. Christ is our refuge and as long as we look to Him,seeking His favor and not the favor of mankind,we shall reap our reward!
