Psalms 23 to me represents word for word what the author who wrote it (King David) went through in life 'literally' and by doing so he is relating to the reader that if you stand upright and walk through life in righteousness with our lord this will be your reward so to speak,or this is what to expect, as you know if your familiar with the old testament he was righteous thru mostly his whole life and our lord recognized this he was anointed with oil to succeed Saul as king of his people, & was successful in all his military conquests in defeating all his enemies to make the nation of Isreal, and to put it briefly he trusted in God since before he defeated Goliath, and God blessed him by choosing him to create Isreal and lead all its people and become an icon of righteousness/author of many psalms of wisdom that he learned by pure experience. Thus making it one of if not thee most loved and recognized of all in the book of psalms, and also one of my favorite nightly prayers to our Lord and Savior.

I read most of the comments and views hoping to find one, at lese one with the same revelations i have gotten about this psalms. I am talking about (I shall fear no evil)before i got my revelation I use to think it ment (will not be afraid) but then it was reveled to me (nothing bad will happen to me)because when we all walk in the shadows of death we are all fearful at times until we pull ourself together and trust in the lord.but the fear was unwarranted becauce just like when some one is going on a trip we bade them farewell,we even keep farewell parties for them, this is the type of fear i am thinking about , so even if you have some fear you will not be contradicting the psalms becouse what it is really saying is you will (farewell) (in the shadows of death)I hope you can see this.

I believe the word 'shadow' was very deliberately included in this psalm. What is a shadow but a shape, an outline projected by the light. A shadow has appearance only but no substance. By using the phrase 'the shadow of death' the psalmist is telling us that death is not really what it appears to be. Often misquoted as 'valley of death' unfortunately.
