Richard, read verses 12 through 17 of the same chapter, it explains what believing in vain is.

    1 Corinthians 15:1-2 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, UNLESS YE HAVE BELIEVED IN VAIN.

The definition of "vain" is "producing no result, useless".

David was saying that when he opened his mouth, whether to speak or to sing, that praises to the LORD would come out:

My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed: I will sing and give praise. Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early. I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations. For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let thy glory be above all the earth. ( Psalm 57:7-11)

But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. ( Psalm 59:16)

Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. ( Psalm 105:2)

  • Wandering Off and Apostasy on Psalms 34 - 4 years ago
    I'm writing this as cautionary.

If you have doubts about the validity of Gods written WORD... you need to search this out yourself.

Google study how the Bible was assembled and approved as the inerrant Word of God.

Right now, almost all of the ancient scrolls of the Bible are under protection in Israel. Being compared to what is in our Bibles now. Definitely take a look at that.

Listen to what Jesus says about this:

2 And he (Jesus) taught them many things by parables, and said unto them in his doctrine,

3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a sower to sow:

4 And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.

5 And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth.

6 But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.

7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.

8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.

9 And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

You are one of these. Figure out which one?

We are living in the beginning of The Great Falling Away. Many people are just going to wander off and not come back. They worship this world system that does not support Faith in anything.

There is "wander off".... and there is outright APOSTASY. The Bible in Isaiah says: COME LET US REASON TOGETHER...

I'm not going to argue myself blue to convince you that Jesus is who He says He is. You need to consider Romans 1:20 and 2:1.

If we wander away after these people who express doubts as to the validity of the Bible, then your roots are non-existent or drying up. Shaken by the wind.

Have faith in God and His Word; which is Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Examine yourselves.

    Mishael

Mac, may the Spirit of understanding grace you with truth, the Psalms were written (as is the rest of scripture) by the Spirit of the Father. 2 Samuel 23:1-2 Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel said, (vs) 2 The Spirit of the Lord, spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. Psalms will completely change the way you understand the word of God when you understand that the Spirit of the Lord is speaking not David. GBU

Bob, we read of this account in 1 Samuel 21:10 to 22:1. Though there is confusion about Abimelech in Psalm 34:1 & the King of Gath, Achish in 1 Samuel 21:10. It's generally agreed that these people are one & the same. Scholars believe that the name Abimelech is actually a title, rather like the title of 'Pharaoh' given to an Egyptian king. So Achish is the king & Abimelech is his title & so we see David addressing him as a king in his Psalm.

The 1 Samuel reference above gives the account, though to read the whole story, you would need to start at 1 Samuel chapter 20:1. David was fleeing King Saul who was out to kill him because David, after his victory with Goliath & the ensuing slaughter of the Philistines, was being praised & adored more than Saul.

After some events, David ended up in Gath to gain refuge from the King (Achish), thinking he would find refuge there as no one would know him outside of Israel. Now Goliath was from Gath, so David in fact, was turning to the enemy's country for refuge - why he opted for this, one can only guess: possibly, the remote chance for an enemy to walk into the city to live. However, Achish's servants did finally recognize David as the one whose praises were proclaimed throughout the regions. So David realizing that he was known, feigned madness by scribbling on walls, dribbling spittle, etc., probably to prove that this 'madman' could not possibly be the dreaded enemy David, but a look-alike, which in turn prompted the King to cast him from his presence. So David then escaped to the cave Adullam.

Abimelich drove King David away, why?
  • Psalm 34 Commentary - In Reply on Psalms 34 - 4 years ago
    Psalm 34

This psalm is titled A Psalm of David when he pretended madness before Abimelech, who drove him away, and he departed. A fugitive from Saul, David went to the Philistine city of Gath but found no refuge there and narrowly escaped. Those events are recorded in 1 SAMUEL 21:10 through to 22:1

Following that, David went to the cave at Adullam where many desperate men joined him. This joyful and wise psalm seems to have been written from that cave, and sung in the presence of those men.

The structure of this psalm is an acrostic, or nearly so. Each verse begins with another letter of the Hebrew alphabet, except for the letter waw. The purpose of the acrostic format in this psalm mainly seems to be as a device used to encourage learning and memorization.

Abimelech was probably a title given to rulers among the Philistines; the ruler's proper name was Achish ( 1 Samuel 21:10).

    A. Calling God's people to praise.

    1. (1-2) A life overflowing with praise.

    I will bless the LORD at all times;

His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

    My soul shall make its boast in the LORD;

The humble shall hear of it and be glad.

    a. I will bless the LORD at all times: Given the title of this psalm and its historical setting, we see David triumphant and relieved at God's rescue when he was held by the Philistines ( 1 Samuel 21:10-22:1).

    i. "He may have acted like a fool, but he was not so foolish as to neglect praise of him who was his only true wisdom. He may have been hiding in a dismal cave, but this psalm tells us that in his heart he was hiding in the Lord." (Boice)

ii. Praise shall continually be in my mouth: "Not in my heart merely, but in my mouth too. Our thankfulness is not to be a silent thing; it should be one of the daughters of music." (Spurgeon)

The righteous cry. Like Israel in Egypt, they cry out under the heavy yoke of oppression, both of sin, temptation, care, and grief. And the Lord heareth; he is like the night watchman, who no sooner hears the alarm bell than he flies to relieve those who need him. And delivereth them out of all their troubles. No net of trouble can so hold us that the Lord cannot free us. Our afflictions may be numerous and complicated, but prayer can set us free from them all, for the Lord will show himself strong on our behalf.

Comments by Alex on the trinity, Father, Son and Granson,If ya can understand Father and son you are seeing 2/3 rds of the trinity 2/3s of the kingdom. but once ya understand that great PROMISE you see that Christ is gonna be multiplied as the stars of HEAVEN THUS AN Israel of God, the multiplcation of very God in us sinners, God so loved the world etc. God is Spirit and Jesus says that which is born of the spirit is spirit thats the very multiplcation of God thats y Jesus refers to the H.G as the Promise he is the multiplication of GOD in us.Jesus cd not refer to the H.G. as the Promise if he were not the multiplcation of God. This cannot be refuted. I know that the word trinity is not in the bible but FATHER AND SON ARE 2/3 S OF THE TRINITY. Which begs the question of a Granson and an Israel of God. THIS CANNOT BE REFUTED AS THE FATHER SWORE BY HIMSELF WHEN TH MADE THAT PROMISE OF MULTIPLICATION. Thus not only are there a ISRAEL OF GOD coming BUT WE ARE GONN A BE MADE GODS TO WHOM THE WORD CAME IT MADE THEM Gods. This cannot be refuted. When God spoke of that new covenant he said it wd be sown in mans hearts from the least to the greatest thats the world ,God so loved the world etc. We Gentiles come under Abraham as Abraham was the father of the circumcision and the UNcircumcision. And abraham was a syrian but God made him the father of the jew and the gentile, thus we gentiles come under the new covenant ,we are the world. But once ya understand that great PROMISE that Christ wd be multiplied as the stars of heaven ya understand not only the trinity but an Israel of God that is gonna be as the stars of heaven.Thats y i say this cannot be refuted, But this has been hid from the wise and prudent but revealed unto babes and sucklings which are the Gransons the H.G plural that which is born of the spirit is spirit thats the h.g. the Gransons the multiplication of very God th children of PROMISE that are gonna be born in us our new birth from that incorruptible seed

The trinity heresy started well over 100 years after the apostles where gone .

Tertulian in the second century was a catalyst for the heresy and he was known as poor example of a Christian in his time . But had some compelling arguments to those not wise in scriptures .

Then the nicean creed by some in the 3 rd century decided to make this trintarian doctrine the Doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church , the majority of Christians at the time opposed it . But Constantine another unholy man made the decision.

Not a steller beginning , but some of the people that refused the doctrine where actually murdered . Many Of them ,how devilish it was .

So if it's not in the scriptures , then it's not Gods word .

Let's see it ! Name the doctrine and it's purpose , found in the scriptures . It's not there .

The apostles warned that men would bring these false teachings ( unscriptural) into the church and they sure did .

Twist the scriptures , but it must be in doctrine form .

    With Clear instructions.

    Can you find it ?

To William M Patterson : verse two is referring to the Holy Spirit, the holy spirit is referred to being the female part of God. In old times it was the mother in the family that taught the children their (ABC) at the kitchen table. So likewise in God's kingdom. Read proverbs, when teaching is involved in scriptures, the word her appears alot.

The soul and body will not reach their destination in peace, because the carnal mind is enmity with God ( Romans 8:6).

For that reason every believer is chastened of the Lord ( Hebrews 12:5-12, Revelation 3:17-19), in order to overcome the flesh and our sinful nature ( Revelation 2:7,11,17,26; 3:5,12,21; 21:7).
  • Andy G van den Berg - In Reply on Psalms 34 - 4 years ago
There are no such doctrines in the Word of God and the Word id God ( John 1:1). Please read 1 Cor. 2:14,15.

In a way though the soul is the weaker vessel of the body. It seems like the body/mind is the driver and the passenger is the soul. So the soul prays that the body is a reasonable driver. By God's great grace, together they will reach their destination in peace.
