This Psalm is such a good example of how David was a man after God's own heart, yet found sin in his heart that he knew was truly against God and sought Him for forgiveness and cleansing. I would hope to be as David and as Him often to examine me and show me any sinful way in me. David hated that he had done or said or thought things that have offended the God he loved so much. I would hope to also hate my sins and confess them to God seeking forgiveness as soon as I realize I have done so.
I hope to be sensitive to the "pricking" of the Holy Spirit" when He shows me a Scripture that speaks to my failure to do what is righteous before God and man. This is what God wants us to do-come to Him with all our sin and failures to honor Him as God and judge, whenever we fail to praise and thank Him as we ought-and confess to Him our sins. He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us as 1 John 1 says.
Good afternoon, Momsage, I am one who thinks that faults and propensities in our personalities and character can be considered sinful. If one has a quick temper, is easily provoked, unwilling to forgive offenses, is self-seeking, envies, prideful, thinks evil thoughts, or any number of "faults' or "weaknesses" one is sinning with these faults/weaknesses when we give in and let them be expressed. See 1 Corinthians 13
If I have tendencies to complain, gossip, talk behind another's back, be lazy when I should do what task I need to do each day, fail to give my husband attention and affection and care to fill up his need-all these are sinful. It is highly probable that you have faults such as these or others that when you read of them in Scripture the Holy Spirit pricks your heart. We are to live godly lives in this wicked generation, especially in our own home and with our family and close friends. We are to practice keeping a guard on our hearts and minds and actions with diligence.
If you read I Corinthians 13 and find that you do not always follow what it says about love, then you can know you are failing to love as God wants us to. Loving others is a really huge aspect of obedience to God's ways. And one area that I don't think ANYONE can do rightly 100% of the time in their lives even as a believer.
Glad to see that you are feeling better. Always feels so good to be feeling good after an illness! Thank the Lord!
Momsage. I do not ant to get into a long discussion about this topic as we have discussed this recently pretty thoroughly. I just wanted to respond to your statement of not being a sinner. I will be glad to hear your response, but please understand if I do not engage in a lengthy discussion.
This is the famous Psalm that I quote fairly often in regard to the "broken and contrite" heart (Verse 17). The previous verse discusses how God does not desire sacrifice. That is because no animal sacrifice could fully or permanently atone for sins; and that the sins David committed were according to the law death penalty violations. That would be for both the adultery and arranging for the murder of Uriah.
Verse 4 has been explained as being the ultimate offense in any transgression; namely sinning against God. I cannot find a satisfactory explanation as to the meaning as it is clear that he sinned against Bathsheeba; Uriah and even with the person that he compelled to bring Bathsheeba to him in the first place. It could be said that Bathsheeba herself was putting herself into a compromising position; although whether it was a deliberate seduction it is hard to say if that was a normal bathing place. Also she didn't apparently resist David's advances so he could say that he didn't force himself on her. Also the death of Uriah was due to placing him in the front lines and "leaving it to fate" as it were. Certainly getting him drunk and enticing him to lay with his wife so that he could be the one who everyone thought got her pregnant was a sin as well. Whether he had asked forgiveness for any of these actions against people before this isn't known.
Hopefully others can give futher insight. In any event; clearly David was immediately repentant after Nathan's challenge and wrote this Psalm.
An intersting side note with verses 11 through 13 demonstrates that for the sake of a good witness to others; we ask God to keep working through His Holy Spirit and therefore others through seeing God's joy will be converted (verse 13). That is more of a New Testament concept it seems that David had some insight into. If we are more concerned with the lost than self justification than God will probably be more apt to answer our prayers.
Thank you very much "Mary Bruce" it is true, I have read in 1 John 2:13-14 important words in an evil world to. In the verses before the Apostle writes about the antichrist who was already active in the world, 2010 years ago, or about.
Stay blessed in our Jesus Christ holy name He loves you.
Thanks be to Jesus the son of God. God is gracious and merciful to the sinner however we must be truthful with ourselves and know that even though God sees all and knows all we must repent and acknowledge our sins to him and ask for forgiveness, help and strength to overcome. Our help and strength comes from Jesus Christ and walking in his righteousness. God is a righteous judge who makes judgement on sin and just because we are under the grace through Jesus Christ does not mean we are to continue sinning God forbid
How needful is this Psalms for even this day. I see the need in my life. No one knows me like the Father does. I don't even know myself that well. Thank God for this tool to help me want to get it right with Him. I can't do anything on my own. I fail over & over again. Yet He makes a way for me to repent & come back again & again.
I know we will know everyone in Heaven. My question is, "Will I know my mom as being my mom on earth and or will we have a special bond with her or will I just know her as Dolores and my love for her will be the same as everyone else, without a special bond."
I know God is forgiving, and I joyfully accept His forgiveness. My weakness comes in my inability to forgive myself. The world is constantly reminding me of my wrongdoing. Sadly, the world to which I'm referring is within the church.
Most true children of God has a hard time forgiving themselves, but we must Mark 11:26

This scripture is talking about forgiving everyone including ourselves because Romans 2:11 (For there is no respect of persons with God.) The lord jesus that i know never gives up on you... do not give up hope as nothing can separate you from the love of god - we are in the family of god by faith in christ jesus. but we have to be sorrow for our sins and repent before the throne of grace... godly sorrow for our sins is true repentance...we are saved by our faith by trusting in him and when we truly, sincerely, honestly come to jesus with a broken and contrite spirit and heart he will forgive us and we are born into his family and become a child of god...fit for the kingdom of god. the lord came into the world that sinners might be saved. he is no respecter of persons and leaves no one out. we are required to seek him with all our heart mind, soul, body and strength. when we do he comes in to make his abode in our hearts - your life will completly be changed - you will never be the same! it is called being born of the spirit of god which transforms us into his marvelous light. baptism in water is also very important. after true repentance the word of god teaches us to be buried with him in baptism which is a good conscious towards god and for our sins to be remitted and cast into the sea of forgettfulness, never to be remembered anymore! glory, glory, glory! be baptized in the name of jesus christ for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the holy ghost. it is a promise to you and as many that are afar off, even as many as the lord our god shall call. ye shall receive power to become the sons and daughters of god even to them who believe on his name - so repent, be baptized according to acts 2:38, receive the holy ghost by faith thru obedience and then continue to seek him with all your heart and you will grow in grace and the knowledge of the lord as the scriptures will become clear and the understanding of his word will also come as faith comes by hearing the word of god! remember, jesus said he that comes to me i will in no wise cast out. you will speak with a new tongue and receive po
I will state at the outset Melvin, that I've never fasted & prayed: I've never sensed the need to do so, though I do understand Jesus Own Words in this regard ( Matthew 17:21) & others in the Bible who have fasted & prayed ( Luke 2:37, Acts 14:23). There is no reason to not fast & pray, but when we consider these examples, it seems clear that fasting (coupled with prayer), is an act to make one more conscious & focused on the important/urgent matter in our hearts or in the spiritual work we might be called to do, that engages with the spirit world.
The opposite is also true: if you have a big lunch & its a lovely warm day, it doesn't take much for the body to relax & slowly drift away into sleep (for me at least). But when the body is denied food & coupled with a determination to bring our matters before the Lord, then our spirits are more centred on this & stray thoughts & need for sleep are kept at bay. As well, I would think that the Lord also sees the earnestness of our hearts about our matters before Him & we in a sense 'wrestle with the Lord' in prayer as Jacob did physically with God's Angel, saying, "I will not let thee go, except thou bless me." ( Genesis 32:26). And James in James 5:16 says, "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much", which almost implies that if we choose to fast & pray, then this adds 'weight' to our fervent, effectual praying. Does this make our prayers more powerful? If our prayers are then made in full faith not doubting, in full earnestness, in full agreement with the Will of God, then yes, by fasting, both ourselves & God are pressed into 'action': from us, focused fervent prayer; from God, being conscious of our appeal to Him & not letting go until we see His Hand move.
Maybe others here on this Site, who engage in fasting & prayer may be able to help you further in this matter.
"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His MERCY He saved us, by the washing of REGENERATION, and renewal of the Holy Ghost." Titus 3:5-6
Zion, generally is referred to as Jerusalem (the City of David). Sometimes, it is referred to as the Fortress of Zion or Mount Zion. The earliest reference to Jerusalem is in Genesis 14:18, when Melchizedek, King of Salem went out to meet Abram. Jerusalem means, City/Town/House of Peace.
To understand 'iniquities' in Psalm 51, indeed the whole Bible, we would need to look at the other similar words as well. So briefly:
a. Iniquities. Heb: awon. Refers to the inner character of a person and points to an intentional twisting of a given standard (by God).
b. Sin. Heb: chatta'ah. Means 'to miss the mark'. As when God sets a standard for us to follow & we fall short of it or miss it entirely (as when an archer fails to hit or misses his target altogether).
c. Transgression. Heb: pesha. A wilful rebellion against a given standard. Similar in meaning to Iniquities but one of rebellion against God's Standards rather than a twisting of them.
All similar in meaning, yet specifically shown as separate words & meanings so as the readers will know what is meant.

A man after his own heart.
Stay blessed in our Jesus Christ holy name He loves you.
Just shows us,all how we need to keep our guard up against satans lies,by keeping our minds and thoughts on God.
We are not to let sin reign in us, but godliness by the power of the Holy Spirit

I believe the key is, Is the wrong doing past or presently in your life today?
We all have had wrong doing in the past and still fail short of perfection today. Thing is do we practice it or have we turned from it?
Hopefully I refreshed your comment so others may help.
God bless, and goodnight.
Give him your thanks every morning.

What does Zion mean, or stand for? in that psalm 51:18
