Man, being mostly cowards, will usually take this chapter as obeying all authority whether it is evil or not. If you are honest, that's what most of you have seen. Why doesn't anyone ever quote verse three? "For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:"

Verse 14~We must put on Jesus Christ like we would a garment. We do this by putting on the true Christian personality and following closely his example.

We see in Romans 13 that God has placed those in authority for His reasons. We are so blessed here in America that whether we agree or not, we can still express our opinions...peacefully. We are to get along with our neighbors and help when possible.,The night is far spent, we will see Jesus soon. Come quickly Lord Jesus.

Eternal truths- Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Romans 13:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. If we speak the truth about the Word and someone bring evil to us, God have mercy on them. Hebrews 4:12 THE WORD OF GOD

Lu2677; This is a VERY important subject so applicable for us today. Many are turned aside from the commandments of the Saviour by hearkening to voices in the world, which say we must stand and fight for our rights. With respect to the Military and the Police, that's there job by God's appointment. But for us as individuals, we follow Jesus' example of love, piety, faith and meekness toward all.

Roman 13:1 "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers (government). For there are no powers but of God,(our government is put in place by God). The powers that be, are ordained by God." This chapter is telling us to give honor, give tribute, love, submit, owe nothing to government officials. Regardless of what they do. His word stands!

Also in 1John 3:14 Jesus says We know that we have pass from death to life, because we love the brethren.
He that love not his brother abide in death.
And in 1 John3:3 says every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Luke 6:46 says, Why call me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things I say?

we are to love all, even thy enemy as he says in matthew 5:43-48 and in luke 6:27 -36 if our Lord did then so should we and pray for them, those that walk in sinful ways pray for them, you cant be consumed with hatred and live in the light of the Lord, you cant live praising yourself as well for good things you do, you must be humble, walk in faith, except Christ as your savior , repent your sins

If you depend on just verse 9, you depend on works. One must take in the whole counsel of God! It starts with Faith, then comes the works compelled by the Holy Spirit. I.E, What is faith without works? - James I believe.
All the commandments hinge on Love God first, Neighbor next. The rest will fall in place with a progressing relationship through prayer and study.

Acts 2:37-38 -- "Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their hearts, and said, Men and brethren what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized, everyone of you, in the NAME of Jesus Christ for the remission and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

    Hi Maria

Answer to your question loving people does not mean you are saved. When you confess with your mouth that Jesus christ is your Lord and Saviour and make Him boss of your life than only you are saved.
  • Ako Ayuk on Romans 13 - 8 years ago
Loving every body is good but love is empowered by God, so love God first and He will empower you to love everybody and therefore you will be fulfilling the most important aspect of Christianity (LOVE) Luke 10:27, Galatians 5:14
  • Rudy on Romans 13 - 8 years ago
We love only what Jesus loves and hate what Jesus hates. If we love what Jesus loves we have no problem because that is what we are supposed to do as Jesus lovers. But if we love what Jesus hates then how can we say that we love Jesus?

What Do You Think of Romans 13? 2 Peter 1:20,21 The Word of God interprets itself in the verse, in the context or in previous usage. If we don 't know what it means then, according to 2 Peter, it is not for our own private interpretation.

Are we not meant to think for ourselves.
  • Maria on Romans 13:8 - 10 years ago
THIS IS THE ONE SCRIPTURE THAT SUMS IT ALL UP. WHOEVER UNDERSTANDS TO HIM, IT IS SALVATION....THE GREATEST POVERTY IN THE WORLD IS THE LACK OF GRACE AND LOVE IN PEOPLES HEARTS AND MINDS. THE UNWILLINGNESS TO GIVE TO EACH OTHER, WHAT ANYONE NEEDS, THINKING ANYTHING BELONGS TO US. AND NOT ACKNOWLEDGING THE FINISHED WORK Of JESUS. EVERYTHING INCLUDING OUR SOULS BELONG TO THE LORD.
  • Brianna on Romans 13:1 - 10 years ago
Technically this scripture could be applied to many forms of atrocity such as teachers and parents, but it primarily talks about government. These translations used, kind of make it seem like God created human governments to rule over other humans. Another translation puts it this way : Let every person be in subjection to the superiorauthorities, for there is no authority except by God the existingauthorities stand placed in their relative positions by God. Brants comment did such an awesome job of explaining how human rulers came about. The nation of Israel had leaders, relatively, but everything was through God. He never intended for humans to rule themselves. He was going to be our rightful ruler. The Israelites gave that up and thus we have our governments today. Jehovah God allows them to exist for the simple fact of bringing order. But, when his day arrives those corrupt systems will also be destroyed along with Satan and the rest of his system.

I believe in just laws ....but when it comes to obeying the rulers laws which conflicts with Gods law then you must disobey the rulers laws in favor of Gods laws. God is the supreme ruler of the universe.

How long did Sodom stand in Defiance of GOD, look at the nature of man, they 've become lovers of themselves, and condoning the whole of the evil Sodomite agenda.
  • Olivia on Romans 13 - 10 years ago
At the time this scripture was written the Jews were in bondage under the Roman Empire. The Roman soldiers were the ones who bore the sword to execute vengeance upon those who did evil. That applied to all regardless of genealogy who lived under the Roman rulers. Today the US citizens live under the authority of the government, which is historically known for being unfair, evil, and wicked. The government have made the police the authority to whom US citizens answer to for crimes and wickedness. They are called ministers of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon those who practice wickedness. Who else is going to execute vengeance on the wicked? The righteous? That 's not going to happen because the righteous lives by grace, mercy, compassion and forgiveness. So you have the wicked executing vengeance on the wicked. If this scripture is only applied spiritually then what place do rulers have here and to whom is the word rulers referring to? Who is the minister of God to us for good? This scripture is indeed applied spiritually and it is applied naturally also. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.

I AGREE WITH BILL...this is a spiritual commandment to our soul its not about civil governments should we obey hitler stalin mao of course other translation make this sound like civil government but the time is coming when true Christians can 't obey the government.......How can you accept the corruption and and atheists of the ANC Gov in RSA. Actually supported and assisted as Terrorists by other governments in previous years.
  • Ovidio on Romans 13 - 10 years ago
I agree with Bill above "this is a spiritual commandment to our soul its not about civil government ". ... Let Every Soul... does not mean to speak about "Every Man ". There has been a serious and criminal interpretation of this chapter, indeed. What it is refering to is that our Soul is subject to the authority of our "tutilary spirit " see the philosopher Plotinus to expand on this who in turn answers only to God and who has been commissioned by God to instruct us and watch over us to safeguard us from Evil and its corrupting powers and keep us from morally and spiritually faltering.
