adverb (perhaps from אוֺ & לַי = לֵא לֵי,, as in לוּלֵא, = or not ?).
1 peradventure, perhaps; usually expressing a hope, as Genesis 16:2; Numbers 22:6, 11; 23:3; 1 Samuel 6:5; Jeremiah 20:10; but also a fear or doubt, as Genesis 27:12; Job 1:5, followed by לֹא Genesis 24:5, 39; in mockery Isaiah 47:12; Jeremiah 51:8.
2 followed by another clause ἀσυνδέτως, it, it expresses vir-tually the protasis = if peradventure Genesis 18:24, 28 (compare 18:29-32) Hosea 8:7 the blade shall yield no meal; יִבְלָעֻהוּ זָרִים יַעֲשֶׂה אוּלַי if perchance it yield, strangers shall swallow it up.
