I've remained unenlightened about this story since I first heard it. I remember asking more questions about this story than any other except one.

So I'll tell you all the questions I had back then;what they do after they got there. And it just occurred to me now that there really isn't evidence of them being "good guys".
Ive always wondered why they are called The Wise Men" and the things or objects associated with each seem to be mote related to something other than wisdom in terms of what each gave to him. Each has significance according to a particular culture, much of which has been esoteric.
Them walking as far as they did with the gifts wearing robes seemed ludicrous.
I think it possible they appeared there another way using a mode of travel esoteric and related to space and stars. They may have been Ascended Beings.
I think I get an actual sense if foreboding in initially hearing of their travel plans. Maybe because the gifts and concerns seem to Br of worldly things. Even the star is a physical star and the culture they were of placed more credence on astronomy (travel and commerce)than the did in the practice of what would be his teachings.
Today they represent the material world and the story days that the power was so great that it made the "world with all it's valuable possessions get pulled toward Jim as well and kneel.

Hi Carols, I believe, there is a signifigance meaning to the gifts presented to Jesus, Joseph and Mary at the time of Jesus' birth. Gold represents His Kingship, Frankincence as a Preist and Myrrh as His role of a Prophet. Jesus although the Son of God, yet He is our King of King, High preist and He is a prophet who was rejected by His own people(Jews).

I am so glad that God's word is truth. In Matthew chapter 2 said the wise men. If you notice everytime at Christmas they always show 3 wise men. The bible do not mention the number of wise men. So this lead me to believe that christmas is a pagan holiday and we really should be honoring God's holy days. Praise Jah

I have read this chapter so many times in my life but it was only today that I recognized some things as yet not seen. I always thought the wise men were soon there when Jesus was born because they followed the same star that was seen on the night of His birth and only now realize that it must been a very long time with travel and inquiry before they found him. I wonder how old he really was when they did see him? Obviously, around two as Herod ordered the sorrowful execution of all children 2 and under. I also always wondered why an angel would tell Joseph to go into Isreal when God knew Joseph would be afraid and turn from it to Galilee. I see that this was a testing time for Joseph. He followed God's command without question and even when he did find himself afraid, God came again (this I had not realized) and warned him of the danger backing up his decision to go. As with all, very much enjoyed reading this chapter today.

Matthew more than the other Gospels cite the prophesy from the Old Testament referencing the coming of the Messiah, though the language wasn't always clear. Nevertheless it was clear Jesus was born as documented and spoke all the words that were supposed of him and performed the miricles he performed in testamony of the Living God whom he served and died in perfect obediance to Him, the maker and sustainer. Your sins are not washed away if you persist in them. Jesus demonstrated the mercy of the Father and his Soul lives, but our Souls are hanging in the balance and our judgement weighed before their throne.

The problem is that Nazareth did not exist until late in the 1st century. Jesus did not behave as a Nazarite; so no comparison there. I think it is all made up. There is no prophecy 'he shall be called a Nazarene'

Astronomy....astology, whichever. These were probably chinese, not sure. Anyway, this was a miracle (divine intervention). For example in the OT when God made the Sun stand still for Joshua ( I believe it was Joshua. I'll look that up. One either believes the story on faith or one does not believe the story of how the magi baby Jesus in a House as a young child. It was the shepherds that found a new born in a manager in a stable.
  • Mike on Matthew 2 - 14 years ago
Astrology is the only possible explanation of this story, at least the first part of it. How else can people "from the east" see a star "in the east" decide to travel WEST to Jerusalem? The star was some sort of sign, not to be followed as some popular stories tell it but as an astrological prediction based on where and when this "star" was. The second part of the story is strange, (verse 9) seems to suggest they followed it, (it "went before them") and then "stood over where the young child was". I defy you to show over what house any particular star stands. All you have to do is walk in any direction and suddenly the star is standing over a different house. Astrology gets you in the general area but I'm not sure what can pinpoint a specific place (other than wishful thinking to add more kick to the story). Actually, astrological references show up in a number of places in the bible. Makes sense, astrology was a part of everyday life then, at least for the educated. We know better now but often forget to think like a 1st century person when reading these texts.
  • Doris Early on Matthew 2 - 14 years ago
The "wise" men from the eastp came to King Herod of Jerusalem inquiring of where the Messiah was that was born...they were astologers and had followed a star. The poin being they had traveled a long, long, distance and had a large caravan.refere to as the Magi. By the time they found the YOUNG CHILD, he was not in a manger according to Matt. Chapter 2. He was in a House. Probably 2years old. King of Jerusalem Herod, being jealous sought to kill JESUS ...so he made a decree to kill all children the age of 2 and under. THE SHEPHERDS WERE THE ONES THAT THE ANGLES CAME TO TO FIRST ANNOUNCE JESUS' BIRTH When the shepherds found the infant he WAS IN a MANGER.
  • Dh on Matthew 2 - 14 years ago
Interesting that Jesus was in a house not a manger when the wise men visited. Also no mention of how many wise men actually visited him.

    derek,
I was reminded by the Lord's Holy WORD as follows!

DOERS OF THE SCRIPTURE ARE NEEDED BIGTIME!

Come on now. You really need to read this carefully. SCRIPTURE IS PLAIN. SCRIPTURE IS THE ONLY WAY WE KNOW JESUS! MANY only go to church on sun-day because the catholics made them. They changed the calendar and PASSED IT DOWN AS MAN'S TRADITION. They DID NOT ADHERE TO SCRIPTURE, AND THEREBY FORGOT TO REMEMBER TO KEEP THE SABBATH DAY HOLY. THIS is not being said lightly. TRADITIONS CONTRADICT SCRIPTURE. WHEN THEY DO THEY MUST BE PUT DOWN IN FAVOR OF HOLY SCRIPTURE. IF not we don't have any faith in what the scripture says because FAITH COMETH BY HEARING AND HEARING BY THE WORD OF GOD! Those that changed sabbath to sunday have abandoned the faith that cometh by hearing that comes by the word of God. Go ahead study to show thyself approved and don't trust any man. Let EVERY MAN be A LIAR BUT LET GOD BE TRUE! HE IS TRUE IN HIS WORD!

Exodus 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.

Exodus 31:16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant.

Psalm 119:6 Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.

John 14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.

John 15:14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

Now, some may quote 2 Corinthians 3:6 "Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life."

But what is also TRUE THROUGH AND THROUGH IS THIS SCRIPTURE FROM JESUS HIMSELF THE FULFILLMENT OF THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS: " John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."

What "letter" of the law is being spoken of here? Is it the letter of the law that is indicated in the following scripture? 2 Peter 1:20-21 "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost." Is it the "letter" of the law that is being spoken of in this scripture? 2 Timothy 3:15-17 "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."

ALL SCRIPTURE includes old an new testament. Circumcision of the male organ is the judaizing factor which is ABSOLUTELY NOT NECESSARY unless it involves the "CIRCUMCISION OF THE HEART FROM AN EVIL HEART OF UNBELIEF."

Jesus said to keep His commandments! One of them is to remember to keep the sabbath day holy as a sign of Him as we await and prepare for His coming. the catholic church changed the calendar to sunday, the first day of the week and the catholics will boast and brag quite boldly that they did because of their IMMENSE POWER. So much is their boldness that they berate protestants who SAY they believe the bible first and foremost for their not keeping the SCRIPTURAL SABBATH. Catholics despise what they call sola scriptura and if they see waffling or weakness or inadherence to the scriptures by those that SAY they adhere to scripture first and foremost, they take every opportunity to impugn their RESOLVE, because they SAY and DO NOT DO!

JESUS IS THE FULFILLMENT OF THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS. The New Testament is NO REPLACWEMENT OF THE OLD. IT IS THE FULFILLMENT! Need proof! Here are some EXPLICIT references AS WRITTEN IN THE King James Bible, TRUE THROUGH AND THROUGH IN EVERY WORD!

    Matthew 1:22
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

    Matthew 2:15
And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.

    Matthew 2:17
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

    Matthew 2:23
And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

    Matthew 4:14
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

    Matthew 8:17
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.

    Matthew 12:17
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

    Matthew 13:14
And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:

    Matthew 13:35
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

    Matthew 21:4
All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,

    Matthew 24:34
Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

    Matthew 26:54
But how then shall the scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?

    Matthew 26:56
But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

    Matthew 27:9
    Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;

    Matthew 27:35
And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

    Mark 1:15
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

    Mark 13:4
Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?

    Mark 14:49
I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled.

    Mark 15:28
And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

    Luke 1:20
And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

    Luke 2:43
And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.

    Luke 4:21
And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

    Luke 21:22
For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

    Luke 21:24
And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

Put away yuor tradition and take up the tradition of GOD ACCORDING TO HIS WORD. HIS WORD IS PLAINLY TRUE. IF you can read it, you can rely on it, even if you do not fully understand it. Ask and YE shall receive will take care of that part. Any lesser standard of belief in HIS HOLY WORD, is accepting the traditions of men and those are the "LETTERS" that "KILL" and those are what JESUS DECRIED AND BERATED THE PHARISEES ABOUT.

If you still insist the Sabbath, the token of JESUS CHRIST AND MESSIAH is not important or "JEWISH", since when have you as a believer in JESUS been CUT OUT OF THE OLIVE TREE'S ROOT AND FATNESS. You as a believer in JESUS ARE GRAFTED IN TO THE ROOT AND FATNESS THAT IS JESUS OUR KING. The Jews wre broken off for unbelief, and do you think you with unbelief will fare any better? Look it up. If it says "unto all your generations" or "perpetually" or "everlasting" etc. do we disregard that these words have EXTREMELY important meanings to ALL BELIEVERS? If you will keep the tradition of separation and GOD FORBID hatred of JEWS, YOU HAVE IGNORED the STORY OF RUTH AND THE WORDS OF THIS GENTILE MOABITESS HAVE BEEN FORGOTTEN. LET THEM NEVER FALL FROM YOUR LIPS. "YOUR GOD SHALL BE MY GOD AND YOUR PEOPLE SHALL BE MY PEOPLE!"

STOP WITH THE TRADITION ALREADY! DO IT ACCORDING TO THE PLAIN WORD OF GOD, HIS WORDS ARE SPIRIT AND THEY ARE LIFE!!!!

You can change the size of the font from your web browser.

Black letters on a white background is the optimal way to read on the web.

    Good Morning,
I would like to see the print larger. Other wise it's great to study from the computer verses the Bible, and thats because the light on the computer is bright which makes it easier to read.
