Victor, Mt 9:16,17 shows Jesus speaking to John's (the Baptist) disciples. They come to Him asking the reason why they & the Jewish leaders fasted regularly, but Jesus' disciples did not fast. To that question, Jesus told them that while the Bridegroom was present, those around Him would be happy. So Jesus carries this thought to another illustration: of repairing clothing & reusing old wine bottles. Just as happiness & a wedding go hand-in-hand, so to using the correct repair cloth or new wine bottles were necessary if no damage was to take place.

Here, Jesus is the Bridegroom, His Coming & Teaching is the 'New piece of cloth' & the 'New wine'. Jesus is comparing His appearing & messages at this time as those that were radically different to what the Jewish leaders taught & that He came to fulfil the Law. If they tried to fuse the new cloth onto the old, the damage would be worse, as also putting new wine into old wine skins. He said that you cannot mix the new with the old or else there will be some major damage not only in defective teaching & living, but also of no eternal life in Heaven.

Michael on James 4. Let me offer an opinion. I think that what James 4:4 is getting at, is that our desires should not be set on questionable pursuits that set Christ aside. For example, it is perfectly fine to engage in all legitimate activities in society. God orders society and sets up guidance for governments. Some people have an ambition to become great at something they do. Sports is a good example. Politics is another. And business is also a necessary endeavor in our lives. We live in a secular society. Not everyone feels the same about the God of the Bible and the standards Christians live by. But it is those standards that I think this verse makes reference to.

As Christians, we are to put Christ and everything He stands for first in our heart. We must not abandon His precepts. When we shove Christ and the Biblical principles we ought to live by aside, we are essentially abandoning Him for things we think are more valuable or desirable. But there is a fine line here that we have to understand. Commitment to certain "secular" endeavors, does not mean you have abandoned Christ. I might be fully committed to my job, but I haven't replaced Christ with it. My desire is not that object, in place of Christ.

We should also be mindful that we are all sinners and will continue to sin until Christ comes. But we all have different interests and talents. Not everyone is going to have the ambition to preach. Not everyone can. So, my thinking is, we can't divorce ourselves from the reality around us. But whatever it is we are involved in, do it without hypocrycy.

But to really understand James, we have to study the history and events of the time. We can't just take James 4 at face value. We have to ask, What was going on that prompted James' statement? An Adulterer is one that sneaks around with other people, while trying to maintain a semblance of faithfulness, propriety and legitimacy with others. Is a good modern equivalent called being a Two-faced hypocrite?

I don't think anyone would argue that the God of the Bible, Jehovah, is a God of Order and Purpose, Ephesians 3:11. We see how when He created the Universe, He organized it and set everything in motion, by carefully coordinating the composition and orbits of Galaxies, Stars, and Planets, Isaiah 60:20-22. He also established Physical Laws to regulate the interaction of all matter. Even the smallest Atoms are regulated. Everything adheres to His Principles for order, Psalm 8:3. That is also true of Humanity and Social interaction, John 1:17. There are set rules and standards everything must meet to function. There is even a cycle in the Earth that allows things to decompose and regenerate. Leaves fall in the forest. They decompose. Then they act as nutrients for the soil. Those nutrients feed the seeds that grow into more trees.

The Bible tells us that in the Beginning of Time, God created the Heavens and the Earth. He also created vegetation, animals and mankind. The Bible also tells us the name of the Creator is Jehovah. In the New Testament we find Christ with God at the beginning. And Christ created all things. So we find that:

2. He created all things that exist, visible and invisible

3. God created with a Plan and Purpose

4. That Purpose is found in Christ

5. Without Christ, nothing was made that was made

6. All things were created For Christ

7. Before Adam and Eve were created, God had a Plan

8. That Plan is called His Eternal Plan of Creation

9. It is also called His Plan of Redemption or Salvation

10. Christ, as the Sacrificial Lamb, existed before Abraham

11. Christ as the Sacrificial Lamb existed before Adam and Eve Sinned

12. Our Salvation through Christ was decided before The Fall

13. When Adam and Eve fell, God's Plan for Creation was already working

14. We are part of God's Plan of Creation as the Redeemed by His Love and Grace

15. We can love God, because He first loved us

Michael, my understanding of Js 4:4, is James' harsh word to predominantly Jewish Christians about their carnality. You can see some of their sins in other parts of his letter, particularly for their lack of works which should be a hallmark of their faith. So, in chapter 4, James addresses their lust for worldly goods: their behaviour resembles those who don't belong to God (like what we see today - a good message to add to your newsletter). To have 'stuff' is not bad, but to lust after it to the point where they behave like God isn't the reason for their existence, is what is concerning James which forces him to call them "adulterers & adulteresses": for their spiritual fornication in this regard.

Since Feb 1, more people have died of pneumonia alone than covid-19. Source: CDC which is the absolute authority. So, no one covers that higher threat, but covers the lesser threat. But pneumonia is nowhere near as dangerous as accidents, such as driving. And smoking causes hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths, as does alcohol and drugs, but somehow that's popular and gets ignored. Strain out a gnat and swallow a camel Matthew 23:24.

Besides heart disease and other higher risks, the absolute highest threat of death is entirely preventable. Not only that but the government actually encourages and helps fund the deaths which is absolutely sickening. It's abortion. Many states even conceal the horrifying high number killed, but it is estimated to be 1 million just in the US alone. God will surely punish severely all those involved in mass murder. Media rarely will talk about the actual leading causes of death which are entirely preventable.

SC, I actually see your lack of understanding of the Scriptures which of course translates to heretical messages. You use the Scriptures, I can see that, but then you pervert it through ignorance. E.g. the Trinity. You assume that the Godhead is Male, as in human male. God is Spirit, without gender, but is referred to as "He, Him", because that is how He has revealed Himself to man. And the same with the Holy Spirit. Christ is the Word of God (without gender), made Man (when you say that "no Mother was anywhere to be found"). Have you forgotten about Mary (Joseph's wife) who was implanted with Holy Seed so as to bring forth a male child, Jesus. This was the only way for God to enter the world.

That "women have been treated as dirt in some countries", is not because of the Godhead being referred in the masculine gender, but because of sin in some males who want to suppress & subjugate women instead of giving them full equality that God had ordained for each of us.

Jesus, the Everlasting Father, is taken from Isa 9:6, where the future special Child is shown to have full equality in the Godhead. And this is not to imply that somehow Jesus has taken over the role of God the Father, but that this Child was the Father's Word made human. In other words, God, the Everlasting Father, came down to man to give His Life for us & He did this in the sending of His Word, Jesus.

Gen 1:26 doesn't speak at all about genders. It is the Godhead at work in Creation (which includes the Word, Col 1:16) & His Spirit ( Gen 1:2) - none are of human gender.

You're correct Bob. Yeshua is not the name used in the NT. Yet, my understanding is that amongst Messianic Jews, they use that Name, probably because of their roots rather than using the Greek, Iesous; Jesus in English.

I know that that Gentile believers working with Jews/Messianic Jews do use their terminology, probably more for identification & providing that the Name doesn't divert from its meaning & application. When working with Muslims, often we use their words for God, Jesus, Salvation, Sin, etc. so that they can understand what we are saying, but of course, often the way they understand these doctrines varies considerably to biblical meaning, so further explanation has to be given to bring them to Light.

You are so right. It comforts people somehow. I have a large photo of 3 mountains and an entire valley of huge boulders. I think of it as the valley of dry bones, (Ezekiel) when I'm praying.

Vernon, from Rev 13, we can at best only speculate what the Anti-Christ & his Mark will actually turn out to be. We have the Scriptures & we also have knowledge of today's world political/economic situation & technology. How all this will change in ten, twenty, fifty years down the road, can only be a guess by anyone.

From Scripture, it appears that both the Anti-Christ is a person (as also the False Prophet) & his Mark, a tattoo or chip inserted into the body. The Mark seems to be required only for trading, rather than identification, as if a person without it cannot buy or sell, which will certainly result in his death if he can't eat, drink or live in a dwelling. Whether this Mark is or includes an insertion of a chip in the hand/forehead is also possible with current technology thereby maintaining uniformity of all people in this regard. And of course, for those who are limbless for some reason, then the option of the mark in the forehead seems proper.

So, I don't think that I have adequately answered your question, as we really don't have enough information to go by except what we are observing now & how we interpret those signs. The signs however, are there for the world stage being prepared for the Anti-Christ, a longed for 'saviour' for not only negotiating 'lasting peace' (false, temporal peace, of course), but also to set himself as the supreme world leader & indeed, the 'christ' who receives the praise & worship because of his great acts of wonder & service to all peoples (i.e. to peoples who obey & bow down to him). And why shouldn't they do his bidding, if it means that their lives will be spared. We can think of the 'mini-anti-christs' of the past: Hitler, Qaddafi, Kim Jong Il, Mugabe, Idi Amin, Castro to name some. And all these appear insignificant to the might & wickedness of coming The Anti-Christ.
